A US marine has been charged with negligent homicide

A preliminary hearing will review the charges to decide if a military trial should follow, the US embassy said.

The death of Teo Peter, a 50-year-old bass player with Romanian rock band Compact, caused shock and sadness.

He was travelling in a taxi in the Romanian capital Bucharest when it was hit by a car allegedly driven by Mr Van Goethem. The taxi driver was injured.

Police said at the time a breath test suggested the car driver had been drinking when he failed to stop at a junction.

Outpouring of emotion

Romania's foreign ministry expressed "consternation" that the marine had left the country immediately after the incident.

It sent an official protest to the US embassy, asking for the man to be brought back and to have his diplomatic immunity lifted.

The US embassy in Bucharest said on Wednesday the US Marine Corps had investigated the crash along with the Romanian authorities.

Charges of negligent homicide were filed against Mr Van Goethem, along with lesser, unspecified charges.

The marine's commanding officer was expected to decide whether a military trial would be held, the embassy statement said.

Teo Peter's death provoked an outpouring of emotion in Romania. Radio stations in his native Transylvania played his music in tribute.

I wonder why our "LIBERAL MEDIA" hasn't reported this. Since they are all supposed to be anti-military..

heh, there wasn't much discussion anyway, just news. drink driving & soldiers go hand in hand. but i do fee lthis guy should have been handed to local police.

Do we consider that sovereign nations have a 'right' to prosecute the World Police? If not, why not? Just have not got big enough balls/missiles/willingnes-to-kill-in-some-one-else's-country? Think.
