Mistreatment of the Koran and Abu Ghraib
I woke up this morning to another story about the mistreatment of the Koran and while I found the story to be negative and repetitive it made me think.
I am glad these stories have come out. While I believe calling for resignations and impeachment are just stupid, the fact that these stories come out do identify a problem and requires the problem to be solved.
The problem with the coverage is that it is never balanced out with positive information. Once the story is out and all the bad news associated with it has been exposed, you will be hard pressed to see any news stories with how the problem was solved and the good that came out of it. In this, the media does itself and the country a disservice.
I still believe in the old saying, whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger and instead of this type of news killing our country it should make us stronger and more resolved. Abu Ghraib was identified and a solution is in progress. Why not examine the good that came out of it? For one thing the guilty parties have been identified and removed from the situation. What is the follow up story? The same old information that we were given in the beginning. I have a friend who was assigned to Abu Ghraib and he told me after the story broke the first time in January, new training occurred and new rules were implemented before it became a media fire storm in March. My question and his question is: "Why hasn't the media reported on the new procedures? I can only speculate that they hate the Bush Administration more than they love their own country and the men that serve it honorably.
Even still with all the problems and negativity, if this story hadn't come to light this type of bad behavior would still be going on and be escalating. I thank the media even if my feeling is their motive is not pure, it did serve a purpose.
