Default terrorist on terrorist

U.S. Marines "have for months been seeing a strange new trend in the already complex Iraqi insurgency." The military calls it "red on red," or enemy-on-enemy, fire:

Quote:
Insurgents, they say, have been fighting each other in towns along the Euphrates from Husayba, on the border, to Qaim, farther west. The observations offer a new clue in the hidden world of the insurgency and suggest that there may have been, as American commanders suggest, a split between Islamic militants and local rebels.

A United Nations official who served in Iraq last year and who consulted widely with militant groups said in a telephone interview that there has been a split for some time.

"There is a rift," said the official, who requested anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the talks he had held. "I'm certain that the nationalist Iraqi part of the insurgency is very much fed up with the Jihadists grabbing the headlines and carrying out the sort of violence that they don't want against innocent civilians."

The nationalist insurgent groups, "are giving a lot of signals implying that there should be a settlement with the Americans," while the Jihadists have a purely ideological agenda, he added.

Seems all this doom and gloom of it getting worse is just that same old chicken litle crap. The left and th idiots think its all going to be better in 30 minutes like the sitcoms they love to watch.

This also some what vindicates Vice President Cheney's much-attacked view about an indigenous insurgency thats in its "final throes" and the "flypaper" theory that liberating Iraq is drawing in terrorists and forcing them to face the U.S. military.

Default Interesting...

I would bet it has a lot to do with the horrible actions some of these terrorist organizations have taken against foreigners and native Iraqis and not only their differences on ideology. I'm sure there are people within there that are appalled by the beheadings and torturing and also want to secure power for "their side."

This is not a situation where the enemy of my enemy is my friend though. The red-on-red combat and obvious unrest amongst them is beneficial to us strategically. What we should worry about is a large scale civil war with two of the wrong interests. .

You are FAR from vindicating his view my friend. Somewhat is a terrible understatement. Both of these enemy groups are no doubt struggling to secure power for their element.

Default Good news

This is undoubtedly good news for the Coalition forces in Iraq. With the resistance forces split, the coalition will have an easier time handling Iraq and ultimately turning it over to the people of Iraq.
