Default Preferential voting

You guys know about preferential voting right? Where instead of only voting for one person you list candidates in order of preference?
Its a system that allows far greater expression and difference of opinion on a voter level, a far more accurate depiction of a nations' choices then a default two party system, because the masses do not need to be homogenised down to two basic belief systems.

Discuss.

Default Yeh

I have heard the term "instant run -off" voting but its the same thing. I.M.O. that system combined with publicly financed elections would go a long way toward making this country more democratic and accountable to voters instead of corporate donors. Third parties would have a chance to become viable. Its an idea whose time has come because computers can readily cope with what would otherwise be an unwieldy process.

Default Hmm

I didn't think about the computers but I guess you are right- it would take ages otherwise, if and when the minor parties got going.
Ofcourse we've had that system here for a century-but then its always been largely 2 party anyway.

Anybody who wants to defend the US's current system? Too politically neutra?

Default Um

Don't we have a hard enought time just counting the votes for two candidates? Sorry, but this system would be an absolute nightmare, and very susceptible to corruption...

Default I

think it is in use in Australia. The system would be no more subject to corruption than the current one. Republicans do not seem to want to mandate a paper back up to computer voting machines- absolutely necessary IMO

Default We have no problem with it

And yes it is in use here in Australia, and in Europe somewhere. As I said it has worked well for us for a century. Coupled with standard country-wide voting forms and practices(hand counting) the practical side is very easy to deal with. Why succeptible to corruption Hans?

Default ...

If you are worried about corruption in the top two parties this is probably going to be important for stopping that.

Seriously this is something good which could last.
