I agree. But it seems to me this applies equally to Bill Gates's $10 billion home (should he decide to build it), Kirstie Alley's flowers and anything else one buys for home consumption. Unless I am harming you in some way, you really have no right to tell me what to spend or how to spend it. I am not my brother's keeper.

Default I also tend to think that "conspicuous" is in the eye of the

beholder.

It's an incredibly subjective concept.

Do you really want your neighbors whispering amongst themselves about what sort of vehicle you choose to drive?

I guess I just don't care...but then, i'm not much of a busybody. I do my thing, I let my neighbors do their thing, and insofar as their activities don't threaten me in any way, I really don't care.

I seriously could care less how much Bill Gates spent on his house. I don't really see how it impacts me one way or another. He earned that money fairly, he's entitled to spend it as he sees fit.

If I want to spent money on my financial priorities (and that's really what this is about, wanting other people to spend their money on YOUR fiscal priorities), i can always go out and earn it my (*)(*)(*)(*) self.

And do.

Of course I have no right to tell you how to spend it. But why am I banned from having an opinion on the matter? Or banned from communicating that opinion? My opinion carries no official weight, but I'm entitled to it, aren't I?

You are certainly free to have an opinion on anything you want. As long as you are not violating my rights to use 20's as toilet paper. Just like the RR is free to claim non-missionairy sex is evil. As long as they don't try and violate my rights to do it on a trapeze.

Of course it is. And I really doubt most people lose a lot of sleep over this, whatever their opinion. Life's too short.

But only through discussion does a society hammer out its general position on things. The rich and powerful are conspicious, and so their behavior is used as fodder for such discussions.

Do we value charity? Then we laud people who live frugally and give away much, while criticizing people who do the opposite.

Do we value modesty? Then we laud people who keep a low profile and criticize those who live lives of excess.

Nobody is telling anybody what they must do.

Do I have a choice? As long as they don't yell at me in person, they can do what they want.

Gates is a public figure, so his actions will be more widely and conspicuously discussed than mine. People still shouldn't go up to him in his driveway and confront him.

Default the right to bear arms shall not be infringed

One thing he omitted was if he is a repuk he is a gun banner.
Maybe he needs to add the line I am a gun banner because the repuks banned a group of guns. The repuks have a governor in CA that signed a gun ban.
If you are going to thump your chest and rant what you are you may wish to be honest about it and tell the whole story of what you are.

Quite the waste of money there. $4 a month can save a starving child right?
That's 25000 people he could have saved instead of going on a ego trip.

Default Again...

why is how he spends the money he has earned through hard work YOUR BUSINESS?

Why not focus on earning your OWN PAYCHECK and diverting YOUR OWN MONEY to your financial priorities?

Default I think it is ironic

that so many are bent out of shape about this Republican spending this money on basically a statement of belief and support of our country, while no one has said a thing yet about Liberals in Mansions (you set the place in your mind, but fruits and nuts comes to my mind) blowing it our their wazoos over the latest "in" social issue. Can you say hypocrisy?
