broad question...
We need to get rid of partisan politics.
That's right, do away with political parties all together. Politics today aren't about the issues, it's about the power each party represents to shove their way of life into law. Politicians, civilians etc. need to stop thinking along party lines and directly address the issue without worrying about how they're supposed to vote and their allegiances. It's a rare occurence when a politician will vote against party lines on major issues regardless of how they really feel about the subject.
Take this "intelligent design" idea that the President is proposing. Despite my feelings towards Dubya, I agree that alternate teachings should be offered as long as they don't negate or take away from each other. Why can't you teach intelligent design and evolution in the same class room? Kids are getting smarter with each generation, I'm sure they can decide for themselves what they want to believe.
Another example is this: I'm for gay rights but against abortion. Can you tell which party I belong to? Of course not because either issue would label me a traitor by my party members.
Politics today are like a football game, with each team trying to lobby the refereee (civilian voters) for better calls and favoritism. And it shouldn't be that way. It should be about the issues, not allegiances are party lines.
