i thought i might start a thread on the role of U.S. influence around the world. the idea came from another thread and i hoped to get a bit more in depth conversation about what the U.S. role is, and what it should be, without sinking into a morass of partisan politics.

any thoughts?

The role of it's influence should properly be the same as any other nation on Earth; the furtherance of it's own national interests, as defined by it's government of the day, employing strategies designed with competence to meet those aims.

But what is or is not in the national interest? what strategies are likely to achieve an outcome in line with stated aims, and which are not?
