I think that an even bigger problem is that many theorists believe that poverty can be all but eliminated by making the market freer, which is not the case.

Default Unless you redistribute income

some people are always going to be poor. I don't know anyone who believes that a free market will "eliminate" poverty. All it does is open more doors. My goal would be to provide a truly level playing field. My goal would never be to end poverty per se. Some people should be poor, frankly.

I wouldn't remove poverty, but would open as many doors as possible and ensure that those who legitimately cannot work are taken care of (and perhaps given some way to contribute). But in addition I'd like to remove the disdain against the poor. Someone should be able to choose a poor lifestyle and not be looked down on for it.

People unable to work is an issue to address IMO. Poor people not so much (assuming a level playing field).

If a person is lazy, he or she should be poor. If a person is disabled or simply has bad luck, he or she should not be in need. That is the essential distinction.

By the way, stekim, you might be more realistic, but some on the libertarian right think that a society almost totally free of poverty would exist if the government got out of the way. There is some truth in this at times, since government is usually inefficient, but I don't agree with it as a sweeping statement (and I'm sure you don't either).

Default No economic system can

prevent laziness or plain stupidity. Luck really does not factor in because luck is fleeting. No one is unlucky for 50 years straight. But lots of people are stupid and/or lazy for that long.

Well, laziness is a lifestyle choice. If a person wants to be lazy, he or she should expect to be poor. Subnormal intelligence, on the other hand, is not the fault of the mentally deficient person and so is not a legitimate reason for such a person to live in poverty.

I think ignorance is more common than stupidity. And ignorance requires correction from the non-ignorant.

Are there any good books on how to go about solving this problem of world poverty, someone like to recommend?
