Default AMERICA: a democracy?

For the purpose of this thread a few things need to be defined. i don't really care if you want to redefine them but i think it will help if they are here for reference.

DEMOCRACY is defined by merriam-wedsters dicitonary as:a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections

ARISTOCRACY is defined by merriam-websters dictionary as: a government in which power is vested in a minority consisting of those believed to be best qualified

OLIGARCHY is defined by merriam-wedsters dictionary as: a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes; also : a group exercising such control

I have begun to question the extent to which the united states is a democracy. i can see that in the world of foreign policy we sure promote democracy but in reality are we really a democracy. a democracy as defined above is the rule of the people through representation. looking at the united states it is clear to see that our government officials follow our interests most of the time. but not all of the time. there are times when they do things that we find unacceptable and it happens on a regular basis. additionally i also question whether we are actually represented. if other parties were more powerful would people be voting for the people they are now. also what would happen if the peoples interests went against those of the government who would prevail.

things such as the electoral college and non-elected positions also make it hard for me to accept that America is a democracy. the ectoral college makes it so that the people don't necessarily have to be represented if those in power don't want them to be. the supreme court which holds the responsibility to interpret how our democracy works is not elected but rather appointed.

based on these factors i have begun to think of the American political system as an aristocracy with the potential to be an oligarchy. this is not actually that bad. Aristotle one of the primary theorists who developed ideas such as aristocracy democracy and tyranny actually viewed aristocracy as a more viable option for a free society than democracy.

In America parliamentary dictatorship if it is possible so to say. Democracies are not present either in one country of the world, or in Russia, on in America, in England, anywhere. (I am silent about Afghanistan and Iraq)
