I really don't like how history seems to forget about the fact that when the white man went to Africa they traded with African tribes for their slaves. This very important fact seems to always be left out when discussing the issue of black slavery in America.
I am not in any way justifying the owning of another human being. I am saying the full truth must be told in order to have an accurate view of the past. Even today many tribes in Africa own slaves, but that is glossed over or just outright dismissed. It is always..."The white people are evil & the black people are poor victims". That is just not so. Even in history books black heritage & black heroes are held in high regard. White history is somehow getting more blurred & sinister. It's unfair, bias, & outright nonsense. |

I can agree with you to a degree. It does seem like the african american population has the right to grievances for being enslaved, and that they should target that on individuals rather than on a race.
Honestly, I'd like to hear the opinions of some of the african americans on this board.. Do you feel resentment toward "Whites" or do you feel resentment toward "Slavers". The distinction has been long forgotten, even in the slavery years of America there were large portions of the country which employed no slave labor, and today there are still slavers in existance who are being largely ignored for political and economic reasons. We didn't end slavery, we just made it illegal in our borders. |

Great post Argyle. I totally agree with you. It seems that white America gets blamed for every grievance black America has just because there was a terrible period in our history where some white people owned slaves. I think people forget that it was white people who gave their lives to see slaves freed.
And you were so right when you wrote we made slavery illegal in our boarders. Slavery still grows strong all over the world in so many different ways, especially in Africa where slavery between tribes runs rampant.

I hate to be the one to burst the bubble, but White history is pretty sinister. We have done alot that never gets talked about in our history books and there is even more about black history that never gets talked about in the texts. For instance, did you knoe the first permanent settlers in the US were Africans? They were slaves brought here by Europenas, but the slaves outnumbered them once they got here and they rebelled. The Europeans left and the Africans blended in with the American Indians. If you really want to get a fair look at history(the versions you don't read in school), then check out "The People's History of the United States" bvy Howard Zinn or "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James Loewen.

yeah, I just got a brand new copy sent to me by my in-laws and am re-reading it. It helps to see the world in a different light. I mean sure, all countries have done horrible thinggs in our past, but we are never going to learn from them if we just completely ignore the fact they ever happened. And that seems to be the trend in our textbooks today.
