Default Washington Redskins to see a name-change?

While watching ESPN with some co-workers, one of them brought up the legitimacy of a current NFL team being called what Native American organizations consider a slur. Never quite stood out to me, but after some small talk on the issue, it left some thoughts of a worth-while discussion I wouldn't mind seeing among some people here. I discovered later on that the owner does have plans to change the name in the near future, but it still deserves your thoughts. I plan to share my personal thoughts on the matter later, as I don't want people solely responding to me just yet. Feel free to leave your position in the poll, but I encourage you to state why.
  • Is it an out-dated (and much needed) title that you're pleased is seeing a change?
  • Is it a case of unnecessary political correctness that further indicates too much sensitivity?

It should be changed. Calling the team the Washington Redskins is like calling a team the Harlem (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s, the California Crackers, the Chicago Chinks, etc. It's unacceptable.

However, some of these NA groups are ridiculous. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Chiefs, Braves, Seminoles, Utes, etc. And lay off the tomahawk chop, they need to stop being so (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)y.

Edit: Funny how (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) was the only slur censored.

Well, I'm pleased to see a name-change. My associate was one of the people against the move, claiming "next thing to go will be the Chicago Bears by these animal rights activists"... which is kind of a silly assumption considering the a majority of team-sports organizations have animal-related mascots. I, like Crom, relate the Redskins name to having teams with names like Alabama Negros or Rhode Island Crackers. I'm amazed it lasted this long.

i see the Lions being a more likely target since the team is insulting to big cats.

If they change the name how will we make fun of them every time they lose? What will replace the name "Deadskins" if they play like they did last season?

It's undoubtedly a slur. I'm surprised it's lasted this long.

now's a good time. their reputation is smeared after a series of terrible seasons and even the most diehard fans feel ambivalent about the team. thing is there was a redskins in the 80s and 90s that went to the superbowl a bunch of times and generated a lot of real die-hard legacy fans and so for a long time there was powerful energy against changing the name. but these days, not so much.

I'm not native american, I don't know how offensive that term is to them
now.

Assuming it is offensive, I have no problem with the owners changing the name...

St. Louis should also be encouraged to change their name from the Rams, to the Lambs.

given their record of accepting defeat, their feeble offensive line, and their ability to give away huge leads i'd like to propose the 'skins change their name to the "washington democrats."
