But why? As far as I understand, slavery was perfectly legal before that time. Why should anyone pay reparations for acting according to the law?
What would you say if for example the ecologists took power in the US in about twenty years or so and would demand that every owner of a car and/or a driving license today should pay reparations for »destruction of the environment« then?

I was being facetious. The irony here is that there is
no one living today that could have possibly owned slaves. There aren't people alive, whose
grandparents could have owned slaves. My point is that people who do not, and would not, own slaves shouldn't be punished or denigrated for what is clearly totally out of their control.
Otherwise, Britain owes us a major apology for oppressing us in the early 1700's!
