At one time, lonnngggggg ago, "civil rights" meant exactly that, eg, the voting rights act. Now it means privileges for blacks. It is kept alive by aging leaders of the civil rights movement who have nothing else to do, and the liberal establishment for purely political reasons. At this stage of the game, blacks are uber-privileged super citizens, with the whole game of life rigged in their favor. Enough.

As much as I think that Jake's claims about Blacks having easy lives in today's society are absurd and offensive, I'm absolutely against affirmative action. I agree that equality should be enforced- i.e. that there should be anti-discrimination laws, but there should be no reverse discrimination for women or minorities and no quotas. The main reason I oppose affirmative action is simple: It makes race and gender issues in hiring and so increases an "us against them" mentality of collective success of one group against another. There should be strict enforcement of and strict penalties to support anti-discrimination laws, but that is as far as the law should go. In other words, race and gender should become relevant only if the employer makes them relevant by discriminating against someone based on them.

Lessee what we got: blacks are discriminated IN FAVOR of in hiring, promotions, layoff order, specialized training, union apprenticeships, military promotion, hiring as fireman and policemen, college admission, professional school admission, scholarships, fellowships, government contracts, bank loans, franchise grants, law enforcement, and congressional districts. Blacks are portrayed as heroic, lawabiding, macho studs in the lib media. In practically every area of life you can think of, it's rigged in favor of blacks. To be black in america in 2007 is to have a free pass through life.

Your basic premise is so absurdly removed from reality that I am certain that you are a racist. You will balk and accuse me of being a politically correct liberal in order to avoiding wearing the name that fits you ("racist"). If you're going to be a racist, at least have the courage to admit it to yourself and to posters on an anonymous forum.

I cannot comment with any authority or knowledge about blacks in America, AA and the like.
I can, however, comment with some confidence about the situation in Australia with our native people. There is a constant struggle with the Aboriginal people in this country being continually viewed as welfare-grabbing, whining opportunists who'd have great lives if they could climb out of whatever they're drinking or sniffing and take advantage of all the hand-outs and social stepping stones they get. Of course, that's a crock, but soooo many people feel that way. Aboriginal people in this country do get a lot financial aid etc, in a botched attempt by every government since this country was settled to make up for the appalling atrocities committed (and still perpetrated) against our native people. It's a bandaid solution to a insidious, unshifting social problem. It doesn't matter how much money is thrown at you, how many opportunities are provided for you, how much the government wants you to be happy with what you are given and shut up and go away, the fact of the matter remains that until community awareness changes, until the reality of what it's actually like to be Aboriginal in this country sinks in for white Australia, nothing will really change. One tends to become what is expected of one. What is fed to you from the day you are born by an ignorant, racist, unapologetic society who view you as scum, will treat you as scum and will continue to talk of you and to you as scum, no matter what you do, is mostly what you'll come to believe about yourself, and will define the person you will become. I say to people, and be honest here, if you think the Aboriginals/Blacks [insert any ethnic minority here] have it SO good, how about you give up what you have and go live among them? With the same rights, the same homes, the same income, the same environment, the same schools, the same EVERYTHING. Because after all, society is rigged in favor of blacks - to be black is to have a free pass through life. Honestly, give up all you have and go find out how great it is on the other side. Really, you should be jumping at the chance if it's as good as you say. Make sure you combine all the great stuff you'll be getting with a superior education, unbiased access to the workforce and clearly advanced status in society (things that all blacks and minority groups take for granted) and you should be happy as a pig in the proverbial. Because after all, their many social advantages are known facts. Really, I mean it, off you go. We won't miss you, and then you can let us all know how fantastic it is. Because of course, once you're there and you're black and you're assimilated, it'll be easy to make yourself heard.
