http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_matter
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_energy Religion (at least the metaphysical side of it) is rooted in the unexplained. What we don't know becomes God, gods, monsters, demons, and whatnot. There are still questions left- for one, it is not provable whether reality is accidental or intelligent... But in the above linked descriptions we see something that only exists as a classification due to lack of information. These things must be real to support all the best ideas for physics, those that seem to explain everything, but we don't know how they exist or what further classifications exist within. We are essentially clueless on this. And while this is fuel for theoretical science and science fiction alike, I'm rather amazed that no religions have formed or reformed in the mysteries of this bizarre quantum physics stuff. Could there be something spiritual to dark energy? Could the mysteries within be the mysteries we've always been seeking? Who knows? But what surprises me more is how little I hear of theologians attempting to make this their new ground. It seems so natural, fitting with the roots of religion itself. The Unknown.

I don't see how quantum physics is contradictory of Christianity, anymore than evolution is. Scientific theory does not make any claims as to whether or not there is some deity behind it all. It simply gives us the best possible answer for physical reality.
What's particularly interesting about this dark stuff is that we don't know what it is. We only know it's there because the way our universe works- it must be. It is not evidence for or against a god... but it makes me wonder how much there is that we don't understand in the equation of physical reality. For all we know there is something "supernatural" about this dark stuff. Certainly interesting from a fiction-writer's pespective... I'd imagine it must be interesting to the religious as well.

We know only a fraction of what there is to know about our universe. Chances are the sun will swell up and engulf the arth long before we begin to understand half of what there is to know about our universe. Einstein once said something like "we have only lifted up a corner of the vail." In infinate space everything must occur somewhere. Knowledge, just like space, is infinate; we will never stop learning, and we'll never know all their is to know. If we did, life would be very boring.

Here's another mystery that remains elusive:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/12/sc...=1&oref=slogin Apparently with only the information we have, the universe should have been destroyed directly after the Big Bang. Some missing variables explain why it wasn't.

I don't know if you have read anything about it or not, but apparently they have created very very small amounts of Anti Matter at the Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois. If we could harness it it could be used as a very efficent fuel for space travel.

http://And Howe has a lot of ideas o...dous materials
This is the kind of stuff I love... how the findings in space travel yield findings that help us in other ways.
