With whom do you agree:

"Do not ever let anyone claim to be a true American Patriot,
if they ever attempt to separate religion from politics." -George Washington

or

"The Religion then of every man must be left to the conviction and conscience of every man; and it is the right of every man to exercise it as these may dictate." -James Madison

It isn't an either/or proposition.

The entangling of religion and politics (at least in the states) does not impose religion on anyone.

it most certainly does, sunnyside.

commonsense, can you provide some context for those quotes? one definition for the word, patriot, makes the first ambiguous, in my opinion.

Quote:
patriot - a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, esp. of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government.
at face value, the second. but the days of gw were very different.

Here's the full quote:

"It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible. Do not ever let anyone claim to be a true American patriot if they ever attempt to separate Religion from politics."

The first sentence is a known fabrication.
http://www.religioustolerance.org/badquotes.htm

The second only appears on heavily religious sites, and always without attribution. I find no scholarly mention of it or *any* supporting material.

Interesting, it seems evangelists chalk up one more in the history of twisted text.

It's where WHOSE religion gets to intermingle with politics that imposition on the unwilling begins.

I agree with sunny. Its like asking if you would like liberty or freedom?

Would it be reasonable to assume you mean this:

1. Would you prefer to keep religion completely out of politics?

OR

2. Would you leave it up to the governed, wether to keep them separate or not?

In this case, I would choose option No. 2.

I think its an important question and worth discussing.
