Well, other than promoting belief over unbelief, and monotheism over polytheism, and frankly, Christianity over other religions.

Was the harm large? No. Was it necessary? No. The state can simply stay out of religion and everything would still function just fine.

It won't matter. In 10 years coins will be obsolete and cash will be slowly converted to a debit card system.
