Marine Reassigned Over Coin Flap

May 30, 2008
Mclatchy -Tribune News Service
BAGHDAD - The U.S. military confirmed May 29 that a Marine in Fallujah passed out coins with Gospel verses on them to Sunni Muslims, a military spokesman in the Iraqi city said. The man was immediately removed from duty and reassigned.

The coins angered residents who said they felt that the American troops, whom they consider occupiers, were also acting as Christian missionaries in a predominantly Muslim nation.

"It did happen," said Mike Isho, a spokesman for Multi-National Force West. "It's one guy and we're investigating."

The Marine was passing out silver coins to residents of the Sunni Anbar province with Arabic translations of Bible verses on them. On one side, the coin read, "Where will you spend eternity?" and on the other, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16."

The illegal war in Iraq is a war against Islam and Muslims by the Christian crusaders.

I think it was dumb of the Marine. Not only was it against Marine rules; it was sure to inflame at least a portion of the local populace.

Sure, some of the reaction is either extreme thin-skinnedness or people deliberately looking for ways to stir up resentment against American troops. But some of it is that a certain part of the populace is already resentful that we're occupying the place, and some of those occupiers are now trying to convert people.

This is a great example of why it's a good idea for people to keep their religion to themselves unless asked. If someone wishes to spread the good word, they should seek converts through living by example and wait for the questions to come -- not through proselytization.

How is it illegal?

If this were a war against Islam why would we bother sending troops in? We could carpet bomb the place to dust.

Affirmative.

Don't stir the hornet's nest.

It was illegal in the sense that it was based on lies and deception to the American people.

I should have used the word immoral.

The marine should have been removed from duty, he disrespected the religious beliefs of Sunni Muslims.

Where is it written that the beliefs of Sunni Muslims (or the beliefs of anyone, for that matter) should be respected? Respect is earned -not demanded.

I believe the goal of the invasion was to make Iraq a friend of the Unitied States and a trading partner,

Insulting the peoples culture and religion doesn't help in reaching this goal of making friends..

Such is the boarishness of Christians. They care not for the cultures they invade. They only care to oppress.
