Default Theocracy in America

Great video that gives some insights into how the fundamentalist LDS church operates in Utah, Arizona, and elsewhere, and the dangers of religion being too closely aligned with government:

Just wanted to share, it's quite compelling.

I have little to no problem with groups like the fundie Mormons or Amish who practice their religious beliefs separate from the larger society, stay self-contained and don't lobby that their beliefs should be adopted by society as a whole (as the Catholics do with regard to abortion).

As to Christian fundies who have wet-dreams of America becoming a Christian Nation, I don't worry much about those yahoos neither. It ain't gonna happen in a country this size and with a population that is as diverse as ours is. Only small, homogeneous countries like Iceland would have to worry about something like that.

Are you from Iceland? Does Iceland have a problem with religious fanatics trying to turn Iceland into a theocracy, as is the case in the US?

No, I'm from Dallas. I'm saying a theocracy is impossible to establish in a country as large and as diverse as ours.

Why would you think this? Well over half the US population believes in the second coming of Christ, even more believe in the Creationist story as opposed to science.

More and more of the US population is made up of hispanics with a very Christian background.

Where do you have your optimism from?

I have the same concerns. I live in the Bible Belt, so I see fanaticism just about everyday. And those people vote on it and nothing else, that's the scariest thing.

What about the other half of Christians who don't believe in the rapture? Which of the many kook beliefs out there is the right one and who would decide? You would have a religious war before you could even think of a theocracy.

My optimism - simple reason, not exactly the strong suit of religious yahoos.
