yes, many buddhists are atheist and/or agnostic, for example. they believe in an afterlife but not all buddhists believe in GOD. some do and some don't. belief in a GOD or gods is not necessarily required for buddhism. buddhism stands out from other religions in this way.

So how would one determine what religion one is if the person does not even know they actually have a religion?

an individual may or may not choose to label themselves as belonging to a particular religion, insofar as all religions seem to contain certain aspects of truth mixed with falsehood. one would simply have to acquaint themselves with the doctrines of various religions (without necessarily agreeing with them) to find out which religion is closest to their own personal belief system. but again, it's not absolutely necessary to identify with any one particular belief system. some people are also termed 'unitarians', insofar as they embrace certain aspects of all religious beliefs systems and view them all as one. i don't particularly classify myself with a particular religious label, because i attempt to draw from the positive (healthy) aspects of all religions, while rejecting the negative (violent) aspects of them.

We preach accepting everyone. We don't necessarily preach accepting all behavior as being acceptable. Or, the shortcut way of saying that, we teach to love the sinner, not the sin.
