Default Occultism/Hermeticism/Sufism

Is anyone else extremely interested in the Occult like I am?
I have learned a lot about Aleister Crowley.....from his travels around the world learning different magick techniques and meditation excercises to hsi establishment of the OTO. I really want to start my journey on the path, but I dont really know where to start. I have a few of Crowley's books, but most of them are EXTREMELY cryptic and I have NO clue how I am ever going to figure out their significance. My grandfather wants me to be a freemason like he was, and every grandfather/grandson has been in our family going back to our roots in England in the 1700's. So I'm wondering what I should do. I was thinking of joining freemasonry, but some of their policies seem like more of a conformist organization than a free school of thought, so I am skeptical. Any suggestions?

It's hard to understand a lot of Crowley's stuff without a solid understanding of the Hermetic base he built off of. Without initiation into a group like the Golden Dawn or extreme study on one's own, Crowley will remain somewhat enigmatic. The symbolism is very important in Hermeticism.

On Freemasons...eh, I don't know. A lot of people I'm aware of believe that masons of whatever sort are good groups, a lot of other people I know think they're just social clubs these days.

Yeah, freemasonry has lost alot of the pinache they once held, mostly because much of their practices have been leaked.

Do you know where I might be able to find information on a Golden Dawn lodge near my area? I have read up on some of it, but I never really came across anywhere that I could go to learn anything.

Im basically looking for an occultic guru of sorts. A guide I guess you could say. I think if I start my studies now I will be able to gain somewhat of a greater knowledge of the world by the time I am ready to venture out on my own (after graduate school and such). I would really like to live in India for a few years and study under a guru, but it is not my time to do that yet, so I am trying to focus on what is right for me at this point in my life.

Try the Ordo Templi Orientis. I don't know if they have a lodge in your area, but they might point you towards some members that are closer.

Beware of gurus. Just be careful.

Yeah I plan on joining one of the lodges when I move up to Baltimore, but the closest one to me right now is in Norfolk, so I think ill just wait.

I am interested in learning about the Golden Dawn though. Do you know anything about the,m? PM me if you can.

Default Make your own choice.

All "traditions" aren't necessarily good. If your "gut" feeling tells you not to join, then don't. Nigher you or the Freemasonry order (or whatever you call it) would benefit if you joined because it's tradition rather then what you feel is right for you. This advice is valid for anyone, regarding any organization, whatever it's religious or political.

Try telling that to Zell Miller.
