Wis. City's Schools Allowing Creationism
GRANTSBURG, Wis. Nov 6, 2004 — The city's school board has revised its science curriculum to allow the teaching of creationism, prompting an outcry from more than 300 educators who urged that the decision be reversed. School board members believed that a state law governing the teaching of evolution was too restrictive. The science curriculum "should not be totally inclusive of just one scientific theory," said Joni Burgin, superintendent of the district of 1,000 students in northwest Wisconsin. Last month, when the board examined its science curriculum, language was added calling for "various models/theories" of origin to be incorporated.

I have no problem if teachers use creationism in the context of evolution, but if they are going to teach that creationism is literally true, then it makes no sense that such a lesson belongs in a science class. Instead, it then belongs in a ancient literature class or a comparative religion class (which I think all public schools should institute).

I think all public schools should have a comparative religion course in their curriculum. I think that religion is a dominant factor in today's world and it would be very useful for children to have, at least, a little knowledge about religions other than their own.

We Americans really have our priorities straight. We want to waste time in science class to teach religion when it is science that is the one of the most important subjects for keeping America competitive in today's economy.
What's next? Math classes where we only teach children numbers that are significant in the Bible? Teacher: Ok, Jimmy what is 7x3? Jimmy: "21" Teacher: 21 is not a number! You must choose the next number that is significant in the bible and that is 40! Jimmy: So 7x3=40? Teacher: Yes, amen.
