Does anybody know where the military stands in all this? Are they divided, or do they favor the pro-Westerners or the pro-Russians, or do they intend to sit on the sidelines? The answer makes a lot of difference to how this crisis plays out.

Im an Eastern Ukrainian, and Im proud to be from the east... ... Luhans'k, Donets'k, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovs'k, etc... Our part of Ukraine is the economic engine.

I however, would NEVER call myself ANYTHING other then Ukrainian. All of my friends think the same. Westerners are not "westerners", they are Ukrainians like us. They speak with funny accents though , but I supposet o them we sound funny.

Our part of Ukraine was simply in more wars with russia, since we're closer geographically to them. also, soviet government placed millions of russians in east ukraine to "end our ukrainianes" and "russify" us.

No one in Ukraine, woh is Ukrainian, actually "dislikes" the other part of the country...in the east, alot of us recieve russian news amd papers, so we're brainwashed..in the rest of the country, they know more of ther eal story..however, lately, more and more of our stuff is coming from ukraine and is in ukrainian, so we're more pro west feeling...everything from TV to papers.

speaking russian does NOT mean being russian. MANY in the west also speak russian, or polish. (usually older people). the young people, who will be the future, are always taught in ukrainian, they all know it, etc. its just as the east was forcfilly russified for hundreds of years, and the west was only russified for 60 years or so, the influenece in the east is greater . Yuschenko, by the way, is from the EAST and 100% of his family is easterners as well . Chornovil, one of Yanukovychs biggest supporters, is from the WEST, as is most of his family.

recently, a sensus found patriotism (almost all of it in young people) grew 85% in Ukraine, and basically ALL of that growth was in the east of the country . 'ReUkrainianization' as its called in Ukraine is happening VERY, very fast. At first, not even the west as all Ukrainianized. It was ReUkrainianized in 4/5 years. THen the center was. And now - The east, thank God, is being ReUkrainianized, like our land would've been 150/200 years ago. Nationalistic people pop up here each day, and the ones who are die hard pro russia get less and less each day (eithere becasue only very old russian ppl living here support pro russian groups, or because they change).

ALSO, and a big misconception - Yanukovych is not even clearly Pro Russia. You see, he acts that way to get votes - But if you actually read his program, it has "euro integration" (EU), and stuff about NATO in it as well. He had "growth and protectiono f Ukrainian culture" in it too. Voting for him doesn't mean "Ihate america! i hate west ukraine!" lol...wake up...get educated a little...it means "i love my country..and its best for us to go to the western world, but slowly, and retain good relations with russia'....i know becuase i know some yanukovych supporters (they're all very patriotic too. they tell moskal (russian) jokes. they're diehard fans of our national football team. and if you ever had the guts to tell them they weren't ukrainian; they would flip out at you).

Here, look at the most recent 2006 election results. the only "pro russian" groups on that sheet are in purple and pink. socialists, tymoshenko, and yuschenko are all pro west. yanukovych is "neutral". now, if you looked at this 15 years ago, 70% of the country (some west too) would be "pro russian". maybe 15% "neutral" (like yanukovych...evidence of this = in 1999, when all of west ukraine supported his group in the elections and the east supported a pro russian group..there was no "pro west" group then..now, there is and they're supported in all parts of the country. interesting)..and a few "pro west people". As I said, ReUkrainization happens very fast .

as you can see, tymoshenko won most seats in east (who appears more 'pro west' then yuschenko). yanukovych won a bit in the east, some in the center, a bit in the west. pro russian groups won a bit in the far east of the country (but in the actual elections, they didn't even get enough votes to get into parliament).


I have nothign agaisnt Russia, its a nice country. Absolutely beautiful areas. Very beautiful language too. But we're UKRAINE - We speak UKRAINIAN - And we follow the UKRAINIAN culture.

Topics like this kind of make me sad, simply because of the sheer lack of knowladge, but, I guess we need to educate people to show them the real situtation in Ukraine. Most Russians like us, and we like them. Seperate politics from real life sometimes. People don't constantly think "i supported _____".... There is die hard Yuschenko supporters who LOVE russian music or sports (like me, i listen to Russkii Razmer, Dj Gruv, Serjoga, and other Russian stuff... I like Russian hockey and football (CSKA Moskva, and Lokomotiv Moskva ,, and etc.... I don't think "I hate russia because I support Yuschenko".... No.. I think I support him because I think its best for our entire country to be more west oriented (and its best for russia to be that way too, which i hope they'll soon be) but i hold no grudges against anyone.

read in the other thread what "russian" culture really is....Ukrainian culture does NOT differ from east to west, its 100% the same. The difference is minorities... In east youll find mopre russian minorities, in west more polish minorities .

Actually, Crimea was part of Ukraine since day one, back 1000s of years ago. Then the Tatars took it from Ukraine, a long time ago. Then Russian empire took it from them. And then Xruschev gave it back to Ukraine, because it is Ukrainian land . Many people protesting there were actually from Russia. There was a funny story ; 2 men, with huge anti usa flags and "Usa out of Ukraine" etc...were arrested for causing trouble... They looked at their cititzenship..and it was from russia..lol..most ppl protesting were russians who were brought in to cause trouble, and make a scene. as you see in that graph i posted, most of crimea is pro west, some pro russian, a few neutrals. the pro west ppl simply dont carea bout protesting and causing trouble cos' they don't need to, they'll win anyway . Off topic, but Crimea is beautiful, nice beaches. VISIT IT if you can, to any one reading

then give 50% russia which is Ukrainian lands back to us, the far eastern lands of "russia" back to china, the south ones back to tatar/muslim countries, the western parts back to the baltic countries. then you, my friend, can go to hell

Only if Russia would destroy all 1750 nuclear rockets...only after it somebody will try to tuch russians borders,but with such weapons wich have no 90% of world...it can be only fantazy dreams...only USA can destroy us and only Russia can destroy USA....if Russia will near death,like dieing animal for last min. for last thing...will destroy every city in the world from Washington,Kiev,London,Moscow,Beijing and others.....If Russia will died,whole Planet will die...just logic thinking....
