quote : Korean Air Lines Flight 007, also known as KAL 007, was a Korean Air Lines civilian airliner shot down by Soviet jet interceptors on September 1, 1983 just west of Sakhalin island. 269 passengers and crew, including US congressman Lawrence McDonald, were aboard KAL 007; there were no known survivors. The Soviet Union stated that the aircraft had entered Soviet airspace as a deliberate provocation by the United States, the purpose being to test its military response capabilities, repeating the provocation of Korean Air Flight 902, also shot down by Soviet aircraft over the Kola Peninsula in 1978. KAL 007 Seems that crewmembers of KAL jets were nothing short of toys in dirty hands of CIA instructors in 1982-1983. map of standard and actual flightpath of downed plane Right after take off pilots of KAL 007 took a course 12 degrees left of planned (standard) flightpath. Navigation mistake? Nope, dudes. They were pilots of jumbo jet, not a biplane. Even legendary Mathias Rust found his way to Red Square from Finland without help of advanced onboard electronic devices. KAL 007 entered Soviet airspace escorted by RC-135 over international waters and controlled by Ferret-type of surveillance satellite. The aim of KAL 007 flight was to probe Far Eastern lines of Soviet Air Defence Units. Plain and simple. In 1978 crewmembers of KAL 902 used to perform a similar task over Kola Peninsula, on Soviet Far North. There is also a good book about written by journalists Robert Allardyce and James Gollin.

The announcer says it can detect targets 10feet off the ground. Which they could test. And they say it could detect stealth targets, which is technically true of other radar systems. But there is a difference between detection and interception. And also what about stealth craft that are also coming in low? And even if they could get a lock hitting a target is another question. In past wars Russian SA-3/SA-6 launchers have had a hard time actually connecting with non-stealthy aircraft like the F-15/F-16 that were flying high so they could be locked on to just fine. http://www.afa.org/magazine/feb2000/0200northern.asp Actually it seems to be a pretty poor performance and that the allied forces weren't considering the things all that serious a threat or they wouldn't have just keep flying around out in the open no fly zone where they knew they could be shot at. Of course I expect the S-400 system to be popular if Russia sells it. Because the US doesn't know how effective the thing is either, and so we'd at least be wary of risking it. And at the least the thing should do better than older systems. Last edited by sunnyside; 03-15-2008 at 12:05 PM. |
