Default Independence for Republic Of Srpska ?

Hi guys !

I have a friend from Serbia who tells me that Republic of Srpska is about to announce independence from Bosnia.

Srpska is a REPUBLIC and has more legal rights to go for independence , more than Kosovo for example ..kosovo is only a serbian province.

Two parts of Georgia have allready announced that they will formaly ask for independence soon at UN.

But I am talking about Republic of Srpska because it is right there in balkans , close to Kosovo and Serbia.
If they go for independence what will happen in that region ??

And would USA recognise Republic of Srpska as independent state ?

What are your views on this one ?

Does "Srpska republic" mean a certain region of Bosnia?

Yes, its whats they call the bits the Serbs got from the "peace treaty" in Bosnia.

Serbs in Republic of Srpska are threatening to do just what the OP said-(I expect they will and then they will demand unification with Serbia.)

Quote:
Bosnia Serbs play up secession threats over Kosovo

BANJA LUKA, Bosnia (Reuters) - Bosnian Serb nationalists stepped up threats on Thursday to secede from Bosnia if Kosovo declares independence from Serbia on Sunday.

"In case Kosovo proclaims independence, we shall request independence for the Serb Republic as well," Branislav Dukic, the chairman of SPONA, an association gathering several Bosnian Serb war veterans groups, told a news conference.

Under the Dayton accords that ended the 1992-95 war, Bosnia comprises two loosely connected autonomous regions, the Serb Republic and the Muslim-Croat federation, with little love lost between them.

While Muslims and Croats want a stronger state, the Serbs want to preserve full autonomy of the region they won in the war with help from their political and economic backers in Serbia.

Dukic said his association would ask the regional parliament to declare the Serb Republic's independence without referendum "if the European Union recognizes independent Kosovo unilaterally and against international law".

"If Kosovo's illegal parliament may declare independence, there is no reason why the Republika Srpska legal parliament would not have that right," Dukic told Reuters.

Dane Cankovic of the "Choice is Yours" nationalist movement, which advocate the Serb Republic's secession, said the movement would stage peaceful protests if Kosovo becomes independent and then pressure the Serb parliament to do the same.

---demands for independence far and wide....

And the clamor for ethnic self-rule has only begun to be heard.

Rumania has refused to recognize the new Republic of Kosovo, for the best of reasons. Bucharest rules a large Hungarian minority in Transylvania, acquired at the same Paris Peace Conference of 1919 where Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina were detached from Vienna and united with Serbia.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia, two provinces that have broken away from Georgia, are invoking the Kosovo precedent to demand recognition as independent nations. As our NATO expansionists are anxious to bring Georgia into NATO, here is yet another occasion for a potential Washington-Moscow clash.

Spain, too, opposed the severing of Kosovo from Serbia, as Madrid faces similar demands from Basque and Catalan separatists.

The Muslim world will enthusiastically endorse the creation of a new Muslim state in Europe at the expense of Orthodox Christian Serbs. But Turkey is also likely to re-raise the issue as to why the EU and United States do not formally recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Like Kosovo, it, too, is an ethnically homogeneous community that declared independence 25 years ago.

Breakaway Transneistria is seeking independence from Moldova, the nation wedged between Rumania and Ukraine, and President Putin of Russia has threatened to recognize it, Abkhazia and South Ossetia in retaliation for the West's recognition of Kosovo.

If Putin pauses, it will be because he recognizes that of all the nations of Europe, Russia is high among those most threatened by the serial Balkanization we may have just reignited in the Balkans.

Bosnian Serbs eye secession, but not yet
Wed Feb 20, 2008 8:40am EST
BANJA LUKA, Bosnia (Reuters) - Bosnia's Serb Republic will not seek independence yet despite the precedent created by Kosovo's secession from Serbia, but slowly continue to strengthen its autonomy, officials said on Wednesday.

Doesn't mean they won't declare independence and demand unification tomorrow though.

If Republika Srpska proclaims independence and unites with Serbia, you will get a very very strong pure Serbian country in the Balkans, which will not be "governed" by outside that easily.

That is the right thing to do!
