Serbia has 7 million people and a GDP of about $32 billion. Kosovo has 2 million people and a GDP of about $3 billion.

The New York City metropolitan area *alone* has a GDP of $952 billion.

My home state of Minnesota, with just 5 million people, has a GDP of $190 billion.

You guys are far closer to the Dominican Republic (9 million people, $32 billion GDP) and Mongolia (3 million people, $3 billion) in importance.
Yes, countless wars and communism did their job. We are looking forward to increasing those numbers as we get closer to EU in the future.

But then again, it ain't all about money. Serbian national pride is not money related. But you wouldn't understand it, anyway.

Well we've done you the favor of putting an end to both now. You're welcome.

I'd love to see Serbia join the EU. Behave yourselves and leave Kosovo alone and I am sure you will get there.

You've have to decide which is more important to you...economic prosperity or "national pride".

No, you did nothing. Communism was finished back in 1990 with free elections and pluralism of political parties being established by the new constitution. But its traces were finally erased in 2000, after Milosevic's loss in the elections.

I would, too. But you should stop using terminology like "behave yourselves" and similar. You are not our elementary school teacher. As a matter of fact, you are far from that.

Interesting question. Well, if I were the president or the prime minister, I would choose this road:
1. economic prosperity,
2. acquiring new allies (or getting back the old ones),
3. joining the EU
4. establishing Serbia as the leader in the Balkans and a factor of stability and peace
5. finally, in a few decades, regain Kosovo with broad international support

But I didn't have military action in mind. Only peaceful reintegration of the region, while preserving the highest possible level of autonomy for it and for the Albanians.

And I hope you do, and wish you the best of luck.

I agree, which is why I wrote "Take pride in your heritage. Love your country and your region." Just don't let it get out of hand. Excessive national pride is what got you in trouble the last time, and indeed, is part of what has made the Balkans such a violent place for centuries.

Remember, I was responding to your post wondering why I think your neck of the woods looks pretty insignificant to anyone living outside of it. In that context, population and economic power matter.

FWIW, I'm sure Minnesota looks pretty insignificant to a lot of people. That doesn't mean I love it any less; but it does mean I don't have an inflated sense of its (or my own) importance. I don't need to feel significant in order to love my home or feel worthy. Just knowing I'm better than Texans and Massachusetts residents is enough for me.

That's a good blueprint. As long as #4 is a motivator for peaceful growth, not a "and pull everybody else down if necessary" imperative.

I agree. And it won't get out of hand again. Those were crazy times. Too much bad blood, too much unsettled scores. We've overcome that as a nation. Nine years of electing only democratic leaders proves my point.

I know the feel... In comparison with Alboes

That is your best bet. If you can get your economy together and Kosovo doesn't they may be up for some kind of reunification. Especially if you include an economic bailout as part of the deal.

I do worry that Serbian politicians will take their eyes off the prize and shun the west putting your economy into a tailspin instead of the improvements it could have.

Take pride in your heritage. Love your country and your region. But please, get over yourselves.

You see Serbia is going to go even further down hill because Serbs were good at taking advantage of the other states in the Yugoslav Republic...... with out the advantages they will end up in the sack.....

Are you serious? How do you explain Kustonica for one? He is an Ultra-Nationalist. He got more than 45% of the votes. That is Scary.

Sure Milosevic is dead, but you still have people with his mindset in the Serbian Government.
