By the way, Serbian Minister of internal affairs (chief of police) is heavily injured in a car accident and is in hospital now. I guess he wouldn't have let this happen in the first place....
Excellent point, now what we need is some information on the national parties situation in Serbia. This event, after all, pushes the fully socialist/radical parties away from the democratic ones. What tensions have there been between the parties in the past? How serious were they? What groups are affiliated with each party? (All this should have been taken into account of our ministry of foreign affairs before we ok'd Kosovar independence)

(It makes me think of Texas' old governor, Jim Ferguson - you either voted for a corrupt politician or the KKK, a lose-lose situation)

Serbia is deeply divided. Some people speak of two Serbia's: one that is democratic, that wants to join the EU, that looks toward the future, and the other one that is conservative, isolated, abandoned by the world.

The second Serbia (the isolated one) is represented in Serbian Radical party (the single strongest party in Serbia). "The Serbia of the future" has the majority of voters, but those voters are divided, because there are many democratic parties in Serbia, and they always form coalitions in order to prevent the radicals of winning elections.

The strongest democratic party is the Democratic party (the party of assassinated prime minister Djindjic, and the party of current president of Serbia Boris Tadic)

The second strongest democratic party is the Democratic party of Serbia (the party of current prime minister Vojislav Kostunica). This is the party of the "right center", but indeed very close to the radicals in terms of nationalism.

The other small parties do not have major significance, but they are useful when forming coalitions against the radicals.

I think you need to look no further on who perpetrated the event of the US embassy. There must be some connection here.

Now, one very important thing:

Declaration of independence of Kosovo was scheduled for February, beacuse of Serbian presidential elections that took place in January. Why is that so? Because if the elections had been held AFTER Kosovar independence, then the radical candidate Tomislav Nikolic would have won. And then he would lay hands on the army and push Serbia into war again.

I know this sounds absurd, but the best possible move for Serbia would be to enter the EU in the coming future. This will alleviate tensions and make the west think twice about their involvment in Kosovo, especially when their government begins to go downhill...

There must be, I agree. But the radicals have no power in Serbian government. I am most likely to blame the prime minister Kostunica (he is a nationalist)... But why would he do that? He knows what possible consequences may occur... Strange...

Exactly! I strongly support joining the EU. And do believe that the new Kosovo government will go downhill... There are terrorists leading the Kosovars now, not some educated politicians...

Default Overreaction?

Are we really going to let the Serb government get away with allowing this? Is that the kind of limp-wristed impression we're going to give the world? Beat us up, and we won't protect ourselves...we'll just cry and run home to mama. What a bunch of namby-pambies.

This is crap. We should have paratrooped a platoon of heavily-armed marines into our embassy, to assure its safety. It's pretty obvious that's the only safety we'd get anyway.

EDIT: Now, the McDonald's? They can level that place, for all I care. Their burgers aren't made of cows anyway.
Overreaction runs the risk of being taken as a sign of a weakness, though, doesn't it?

Yes, but Russian response would be immediate. USA should forget military involvement in the Balkans. Boris Yeltsin is long gone, and another man sits in Kremlin now. And you don't want to try and play him around, do you?
Maybe we do. He doesn't seem to be doing anything about the Kosovo independence except speeches.

Thats a Russian leader I can learn to like.

Should we have expected more? Perhaps there was no sinister motive at all. Perhaps it was merely incompetence from the Serbia police.

There were an awful lot of people involved. Maybe they were just overwhelmed.
