Russia warns U.S. over illegal arming of Kosovo

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that the supply of U.S. weapons to Kosovo could further destabilize the Balkans. Speaking in Israel, Lavrov said the only legitimate delivery of arms to Kosovo were those made to the international contingent working under a UN mandate.

“The only legitimate basis for regulating the situation in Kosovo is Security Council resolution 1244. It does not allow Kosovo to have its own army or for anybody to supply military equipment to Kosovo except for supplies to the international contingent working under a UN mandate. Any other supplies are illegitimate,” Lavrov said.

He added that he wouldn’t like to think that supplies there are aimed at forcing Serbs and other minorities to remain within the illegally proclaimed state. “I don't think this will contribute to stability in the Balkans,” Lavrov concluded.

Do you think Kosovo Albanians should have an army?

I am not interested in Albanians' opinion, since their answer is clear enough. I want to hear the foreigners.

I think, as a state, they should eventually have an army. It could wait a little while though. We didn't want to have to keep NATO there forever. That's a big part of why statehood was declared it was either independence or giving them back to the Serbs.

On the note of trapping people inside I hope they're freely letting Serbs get out. Keeping them in wouldn't be doing anybody any favors.

Depends. Are they buying from American weapons dealers or is the US Govt giving it to them?

If they paying, fine by me.

Exactly how I feel, why do we feel the need to get involved in something like this???

To help protect a newly born Democracy against the pan Russian-Serbian slavic pact - that would sufficate this new Democracy in its craddle if NATO was not there and it was not given the support it requires!

We've been involved since 1999. Giving them independence and an army is our way out.

Ideally they should buy the equipment. But if it lets us remove some of our equipment and forces it might be profitable for us to just give stuff to them. Plus you'd think we'd have some old stuff like Patton tanks sitting around we could give away.

This may be somewhat less necessary if we decide to build a big military base there. I don't know if it'd add much tactically considering what we already have but we seem to be happy to add more major airbases and if the situations sour with Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, or Turkey we'd be glad we had it. And we're getting at least a little flack from each of them.

Excellent point, more troops to Iraq and Afganistan to help complete the mission.

I am very disappointed that other NATO partners such as France,Germany,Italy,Spain etc etc are not committing front line troops to action in Afghanistan.

I blame the politicians in their homelands - not the service men and women theselves - I'm sure they would love a crack at the enermy !!!!

If all NATO members pulled their weight so to speak, the US wouldn't have to scrifice so much for World Democracy, they do and respect to them.
