Default Ukraine & Georgia: no way into NATO

Ukraine & Georgia: no way into NATO

The leaders of NATO member states have failed to agree on an action plan for Ukraine and Georgia to join the alliance at the NATO summit in Bucharest. The U.S. President, George Bush, had been urging member states to support the eastward expansion of the security organisation.

Bush, however, faced a tough sell as roughly half the states in NATO had previously stated they were against the accession of Ukraine and Georgia - among them France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Referring to Ukraine, German Chancellor Merkel said a country should only be allowed to join if membership was backed by the majority of its population.

For its part, France feared the move could harm relations with Moscow.

Among those supporting Georgia and Ukraine along with the United States, were the UK, Canada and several NATO newcomers.

The Kremlin doesn't hide its misgivings over the further expansion of NATO close to its borders. When the USSR collapsed Moscow was promised that the alliance would not come to its borders. That promise was broken, and so was the trust.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko are eager to get a Membership Action Plan that will lead them to NATO even without the support of their people.

In order to join the alliance, a country has to satisfy at least two major criteria - territorial integrity and consensus among political leaders.

Georgia voted to join the alliance in January, but Tbilisi didn’t take into account the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia – they weren’t even given the opportunity to vote.

Meanwhile, support for joining NATO is patchy among Ukraine’s political elite, and public support is even lower. Around 60 per cent of the population is against joining the Atlantic alliance, according to polls. The U.S. President offered support to his Ukrainian counterpart during his visit to Kiev ahead of the summit.

With all the political changes in Russia, the future of NATO-Russian relations will also be up for discussion.

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, will arrive in Bucharest on Thursday to take part in the Russia-NATO Council session.

Washington's position on NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia adds tension to the already complicated relations with Moscow, which have been tested by U.S. plans to deploy its anti-missile defence system in Eastern Europe. Many hope for a breakthrough during the forthcoming meeting between George Bush and Vladimir Putin in Sochi

Guess Uncle Sam won't be seeing them in NATO in the near future. And Putin is about to "look Bush in the eyes" (and show his goodness) and persuade him to give up.

dont fool yourself......Georgia and Ukraine will join in. Remember how desperate the Russian are eager to join WTO. And I shall thank Georgia for being able to block the accession of Russia in WTO.

Russia loses roughly 13.5 billion dollars on trade by being excluded from this World Trade Organization.

Georgia will hardly join NATO. Not only does Russia oppose this, but France, Spain and some other NATO countries as well...

Looks like Uncle Sam is on his own considering this issue

But give me an answer to this: why does America push so hard to see Georgia within NATO (even throwing internal NATO relations at stake) if NATO claims its goal is not to surround Russia?

Ukraine’s anti-NATO supporters rejoice

Protesters in Kiev are going ahead with their planned anti-NATO demonstrations, turning them into celebrations instead. It follows NATO’s rejection of the government’s application to join the Western military alliance.

Around 2,000 people have taken to the streets to celebrate. The Party of the Regions has organised a concert in the centre of Kiev, inviting singers from Russia to take part.

Similar events have been planned across eastern Ukraine, the stronghold of the anti-NATO lobby. They see relations with Russia as more important than a union with NATO.

The bid to join NATO has been a divisive issue in the country for some time. Opinion polls conducted in Ukraine over the last 15 years consistently show that more than half of the population is against joining the alliance - almost 62% of Ukrainians voted against NATO membership.

Even a government-sponsored ‘information’ campaign has failed to win over the public. Despite these figures, Ukraine’s government continues to push for membership.

Because Russia is a semi-anarchic, autocratic and very corrupt country. You cannot rely on a country that does not believe on Democratic values. Russians do not care about the security of other European nations.
The US is merely trying to protect the entire continent Europe from future terrorist attacks. Something that Russia does not understand neither cares about it. I mean, they killed their own , what the heck.

Russia is a not a stability factor in the continent of Europe. Russia is not a democratic country. Russia supports many terrorist groups in the world. As Russia keeps arming middle eastern countries that embrace terrorism, the US will continue get closer to Russian borders. What was Putin thinking? He could just block whatever he wants....The EU and US will besiege Russia by all means.

Surely, Ukraine will join NATO one day. I hope Georgia as well.

Have you noticed its proximity to some other nations we have an interest in? One in particular?

Personally I think those two countries need to work a couple things out. Though if at some point they lose their sub provinces the main chunks should consider joining up.

I'm not sure why the US would want Georgia with it province issues. Maybe they're thinking of SEALs in the Caspian?
