Default Armenia remembers 1.5 MLN genocide victims

Quote:
Armenians are remembering 1.5 million of their countrymen who were killed by the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian genocide of 1915.

On this day 93 years ago the Ottoman Empire (present day Turkey) is said to have begun a massacre against Armenians living in the country.

In the Armenian capital, Yerevan hundreds of thousands of people are expected to gather at the monument to the genocide and light candles in memory of the victims.

Russia and twenty one other countries officially recognise the events of 1915 as genocide.

Meantime, Turkey refuses to recognise the massacre as genocide and claims these figures are greatly exaggerated.
Russia today

Turkey - one of the few Muslim countries that have recognized independent Kosovo, also a great ally of Uncle Sam and a country that converted majority of Albanians to Islam, has committed the first ever recognized genocide against the Armenians. These days, they are doing the same thing to the Kurds. Yet, Uncle Sam has no problem with that, since he has no concern for human rights unless he can make profit out of it.

Then why doesn't Russia do something about it?

You will find some painful information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenian_Genocide

Quote:
Influence of the Armenian Genocide on Adolf Hitler

Main article: Armenian quote

The Armenian Genocide is often speculated to have influenced Adolf Hitler (who led Nazi Germany, which was responsible for the Holocaust), owing to his various references to the Ottoman killings of Armenians.[84] The extent of Hitler's knowledge of the Armenian Genocide is unclear, though he did refer to their destruction several times.[85] The most notable quote attributed to Hitler on the Armenians is excerpted from an August 1939 military conference, before the invasion of Poland:
“ I have issued the command—and I’ll have anybody who utters but one word of criticism executed by a firing squad — that our war aim does not consist in reaching certain lines, but in the physical destruction of the enemy. Accordingly, I have placed my death-head formation in readiness — for the present only in the East — with orders to them to send to death mercilessly and without compassion, men, women, and children of Polish derivation and language. Only thus shall we gain the living space [Lebensraum] which we need. Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?[86] ”

There are numerous accounts of Hitler speaking in regard to the Armenians, with at least two similar versions of the 1939 speech coming from the German High Command archives. In 1931, for example, two years prior to his ascension as Germany's leader, Hitler noted in an interview that "everywhere people are awaiting a new world order. We intend to introduce a great resettlement policy… remember the extermination of the Armenians."[87] In 1943, during the height of his attempts to exterminate the Jews in Europe, Hitler demanded of Hungarian regent Admiral Miklós Horthy that he deport the Jews from the country: "Nations which did not get rid of the Jews perished. One of the most famous examples of this was the downfall of a people who were so proud — the Persians, who now lead a pitiful existence as Armenians."[88]

Quote:
The Kurdish Genocide

Desmond Fernandes, who has worked on the Kurdish Genocide extensively, continued the seminar with a powerful discussion of the persecution of Kurds in modern Turkey. Fernandes pointed out that the Turkish government adopted a much more sustained genocidal program against Kurds, aimed at the assimilation of this community as ethnic Turks. Often the engineers of the destruction of Kurds were the same people who destroyed Armenians a few years earlier. Fernandes outlined the Turkish genocidal policy under the following categories:

(1) forced assimilation program—banning of the Kurdish language in Turkey, denying the existence of Kurdish history, the forced resettlement of Kurds in non-Kurdish areas of Turkey for assimilation, the indoctrination of Kurds through the Turkish education system, radio and television channels;

(2) banning of any legitimate opposition to the Turkish government’s programs—e.g., Kurdish cultural organisations, political parties, media outlets, etc.; and

(3) the violent repression of any Kurdish resistance. Hundreds of thousands of Kurds have been murdered by Turkish state authorities over the past eighty years—the Sheykh Said and the Ararat uprisings in the 1920s, the bloody suppression of the Dersim in the 1930s, as well as the PKK campaign in recent years. The Turkish state has imprisoned Kurdish members of the Turkish parliament, various human rights activists, as well as many academics advocating Kurdish rights such as the Turkish sociologist Ismail Besikçi. The Turkish government has also assassinated scores of journalists and intellectuals over the years.

[For a detailed analysis by Desmond Fernandes--including a thought-provoking discussion of the definition of genocide--see "The Kurdish Genocide in Turkey, 1924–1998," Armenian Forum 1, no. 4 (Winter 1998–99), pp. 57–107.]

If the Russians are so concerned what are they doing about it?

How come Uncle Sam has no problem with cooperating with such a country? Guess why - because of USA's military bases in Turkey.

I already responded. And I am not pointing out Russia's stance, but my own. I am not a Russian. Go ask them.
