"One in six Serbians without elementary school"

BELGRADE -- Of Serbia's 7.5 million citizens, more than 1.2 million did not complete elementary education, Biznis i Finansije magazine claims.

At the same time, the weekly quotes data released by the Statistical Office, which shows that 8.5 percent of the population is completely illiterate.

At the same time, the article says, 126,127 citizens completed one to three years of elementary school, whereas 898,847 only completed four to seven years.

The results of reading tests in Serbia demonstrate that 40 percent of the persons who declared themselves literate in fact were not, while that percentage was even higher for writing tests.

At the same time, Serbia is the only country in Europe where the number persons with high education has dropped in the last fifteen years – today standing at 7 percent.

Although secondary education is free, not everyone uses this opportunity, and every year high schools report capacity to take on 10,000 additional students.

Serbia spends around 3.8 percent of the GDP on education of some half a million elementary, secondary and university students each year, and falls into the category of countries with the lowest education budget in Europe.

This incessant argument is insanity!! Kosovo is not Serbian. It is a new state in Europe.
Serbs like you are HOSTAGES TO A MYTH!, which disqualify your country from joining the process of Europeanisation and modernisation.
History for the serbs in Kosovo started in the 7th century when they settled in the Balkans. Their power base was outside Kosovo, which they didnt fully conquer until the 13th century, so the claim that Kosovo was the cradle of the Serbs IS UNTRUE!
What is true, is that the Serbs ruled Kosovo for about 250 years until the final Ottoman takeover in the 15th century. Kosovo remained Ottoman territory until it was conquered by Serb forces in 1912. Serbs would say "liberated" but when even their own estimates put the Serb population at less than 25% and the majority Albanian population did not welcome Serb rule, "conquered" seems the right word.
But LEGALLY, Kosovo was not incorporated into the Serb kingdom in 1912, it remained occupied territory until 1918. Then finally, it was incorporated NOT INTO A SERBIAN STATE but into a YUGOSLAV one.
Until the destruction of the old federal Yugoslavia by Milosevic, Kosovo in all practical ways functioned as one unit of that federation, having its own parliament and governement. It was in fact one of the 8 units of the federal system.
Almost ALL the other units have now become INDEPENDENT STATES. The independence of Kosovo just completes that process.
So if anything, Kosovo is an ex-Yugoslav state, not an ex-Serbian state.
