Serbia:Beatings after talk on football mafia
Beatings after talk on football mafia
BEOGRAD – Newspaper sports journalist Mladen Stojovic, who discussed the presence and dealings of football mafia in the Serbian game on B92 programme “Insajder” ("Insider"), has been attacked in his apartment in Bar, Montenegro, under undisclosed circumstances. Stojovic suffered head and body trauma on Friday night and was admitted to hospital in Podgorica, where he is to undergo surgery on Thursday.
In his statement for B92 Stojovic claims the sole reason for the assault on him could be his newspaper columns on match-fixing allegations, which he also discusses on the “Insajder” documentary programme. As a result of the assault, Stojovic has sought police protection, which he insists he is entitled to, while the police state his request was only submitted on Tuesday and is now being processed.
Although four days have passed since the assault, the investigation has not shed any light on the matter yet, while Stojovic claims the Montenegro police are trying to “blunt the edge of the issue”.
- “I was found severely beaten and suffering from amnesia. Although doctors have found a new bone fracture every time I visited them since the attack, I am being forced to seek my own protection and no actions have been taken automatically,” Stojovic says for B92.
Stojovic expresses further disappointment as Montenegrin police investigation has estimated his injuries to be “slight”, whereas the neuropsychiatrist who examined him at the City Hospital says otherwise.
- “At the City Hospital I wasn’t diagnosed with either the mandible (jawbone) fracture or the upper jaw fracture, although the CT scan clearly shows at least one of the two fractures. The neuropsychiatrist made a comment while he was examining me and said it looked to him like “an attempt of murder”. Ever since that moment I’ve been considering the option,” says Stojovic.
The police have stated Stojovic was alone in his apartment on Friday and that he does not remember locking the front door or whether anyone entering his premises.
- “He said he didn’t remember if he’d had any visits and that he had been sitting at his computer when he suddenly felt unwell. He couldn’t explain the cause of the feeling,” says Tamara Popovic, Montenegro police press agent.
According to Popovic, Stojovic was lying prostrate on the floor when he sustained a severe blow to the head. The next thing her remembered was the hospital.
The sports journalist, however, admits he does not have recollection of signing a police report on Friday night in his apartment.
- “I was absolutely shell-shocked and confused, but no one seems to have taken that into account,” says Stojovic.
Appearing in the B92 documentary “Insajder” dealing with match-fixing and extortion allegations in Serbian football Stojovic discussed the influence of organized crime groups on the Serbian football organizations. The documentary programme author Brankica Stankovic confirms Stojovic received death threats shortly after the show was first run on B92 TV.
- “Some previous guests to the show were handed notices and relegated. When we did the football mafia serial, it was the first time we received threats. The production team were threatened before the airing, while Stojovic received threats after the show was run on B92,” says Stankovic.
Montenegro journalists’ association president Veselin Drljevic has said there is no doubt Stojovic was attacked as a result the claims he made on match fixing in Serbian football and added he believed it was unlikely the instigators would be caught.
