Abkhazia shuts border after ‘Georgian terrorist attacks’

Abkhazia has closed its border with Georgia pending a special order, the Abkhazian Security Council has announced. Several explosions have been reported in the past two days, injuring several people. Abkhazia blames Georgia for waging a ‘terrorist war’ against it.
According to Abkhazian presidential spokesman Kristian Bzhania, all posts on the Georgia-Abkhazia border were closed on Tuesday at 8 am local time. The main bridge over the Inguri river, connecting Georgia and Abkhazia, is also closed.

"The ban applies to civilians and vehicles. Only representatives of international missions accredited in Abkhazia will be cleared following consultations with the Foreign Ministry and State Security Council," said Bzhania.
Abkhazian President Sergey Bagapsh is blaming the blasts on special forces taking orders from Tbilisi.

Georgian Foreign Minister Eka Tkeshelashvili said they regret that Abkhazia “took this very irresponsible and inadequate measure which jeopardises the means of communication and movement of people who live in Abkhazia”.
She said freedom of movement on the Inguri river benefits not only Georgians, but Abkhazians as well.
According to Maksim Gvindzhia, Deputy Foreign Minister of Abkhazia, seven people were injured in the latest explosion in the capital Sukhumi. They are being treated in hospital where some are believed to be critically injured. There are unconfirmed reports of fatalities, but, Gvindzhia stressed they are as yet unconfirmed.
One Russian tourist is believed to be among the injured.
The explosions, which went off in a crowded market on Monday are believed to have been caused by bombs hidden in bins.
It's the second such incident in two days. Six women were injured on Sunday in a blast in the city of Gagra.

Abkhazia is blaming Georgia for the explosions.

“These blasts are the work of Georgian special services. I’ve been saying for several years that it’s a country of terrorism. Their whole policy is based on terror, but we are going to fight it, and the situation will be under control. I can’t promise you that the same thing won’t happen tomorrow because anything is possible, but we’re taking all measures to find the terrorists,” President Bagapsh said.
But Georgian officials deny any responsibility for such incidents, calling them provocation.

“The accusations made by the authorities in Sukhumi against Georgia are not serious and are absolutely groundless. Tbilisi is constantly being blamed for all the negative events in the Abkhazia region, without waiting for any investigation of any of the evidence,” Georgia’s Defence Minister David Kezerashvili said.

Blocking the border

Abkhazia is a self-proclaimed republic that was part of the Soviet republic of Georgia.

After the fall of the USSR in 1991, Abkhazia's attempts to declare independence led to Georgia sending armed forces to Sukhumi and starting a full-blown war.
Fighting ended one year later when CIS peacekeepers, most of them Russian, went in to Abkhazia to separate the conflicting sides. Together with UN forces, they remain stationed in the bordering Gali region.
Georgia still considers Abkhazia part of its territory and wants to regain control over the region. Tbilisi also says that Russian peacekeepers should be withdrawn, which could raise tensions in the region.

Peace talks between the two sides broke down two years ago.
Recently, Georgia sent reinforcements to the region, sparking fears in Abkhazia that Tbilisi was planning a military campaign.
Russia responded by increasing its peacekeeping force up to 2,500, which Georgia claims is a move by Moscow aimed at annexing the region.

Russian peacekeepers blame new Abkhazia blast on Georgia

09:52 | 02/ 07/ 2008

MOSCOW, July 2 (RIA Novosti) - A commander of the Russian-led peacekeeping contingent deployed in the conflict zone between Georgia and breakaway Abkhazia accused Georgian security forces of setting off a new explosion in the region on Wednesday morning.

The blast went off near a Russian peacekeeping checkpoint on the border between Georgia and Abkhazia. No one was killed or injured, Georgian television reported.

"A car with unidentified people inside passed through the checkpoint in Georgia," Alexander Diordiyev said. "Georgian troops did not even try to stop the car."

He said Georgian security services' acts were aimed at provoking peacekeepers and destabilizing the area.
The incident follows two sets of explosions on Sunday and Monday in the breakaway province. Abkhaz authorities blamed both incidents on Georgian security forces.

2 dead, 11 injured in blast in Russia's Black sea resort

Many believe that this terrorist act was planed and executed by the pro-American regime of Saakashvilli

An explosion has ripped through a 12-storey apartment block in the Russian resort city of Sochi, killing at least two people and leaving more than 30 others injured. A 14-year-old and his grandmother were killed. A criminal case has been opened into the incident.

The blast shook the apartment in the Blinovo block at 5:34 am.

Those who live in the building and hundreds of people in the neighborhood were terrified.

“I’m from the neighbouring house. We were scared when the glass was smashed out. Thank god the children are alive,” a witness said.

“I was on the 12th floor when the explosion went off. Half past four it blew. I thought it was a thunderstorm, but then the smoke went in and I started to choke. And only just now they took me down,” a woman recalls.

“We rushed out of our beds when we heard a powerful blast. When we looked out of the window there was smoke all over the place. My husband came down, saw what happened and started helping people,” another woman said.
The blast destroyed the only staircase in the building, making it impossible for survivors to escape.
Minutes later firemen arrived on the scene and used their ladders to help people leave their apartments.

All 120 residents of the building have been evacuated.

Default Similar rhetoric to pre-Iraq War

I see Russia and North Pole Resident are taking a page out of the George Dubya playbook. All this stuff sounds an awful lot like the stuff coming out of the Bush Administration before the invasion of Iraq. Jeez, I wonder what the Russians are thinking of doing?

The sooner Georgia becomes a full member of NATO the better.

Then NATO will be able to send troops to kick out the CIS and put a stop the Russian Imperialist desires to annex Abkhazia.

Abkhazian Conflict: Nine Questions and answers Andreas Andersen’s assertions and George Hewitt's responses

------------------------------

A chapter from Sam Topalidi's book ''A Pontic Greek History''

Note 2.3

Ascherson (1,1995, pp. 253-4), describes how the State Archives building was destroyed during the civil war in Abkhazia (trying to gain its autonomy from Georgia).

One day in the winter of 1992, a white Lada without number-plates, containing four men from the Georgian National Guard, drew up outside. The guardsmen shot the door open and then flung incendiary grenades into the hall and stairwel. … Sukhum citizens tried vainly to break through the cordon and enter the building to rescue burning boks and papers. … The archives also contained the entire documentation of the Grek community, including a library, a collection of historical research from all the Grek villages of Abkhazia and complete files of the Grek language newspapers going back to the first years after the revolution.

Please note that this story was previously quoted in Agtzidis (Jan 1994). Agtzidis (1994) states on page 27 that, Kharalombos Politidis witnessed the catastrophe described above. Clogg (1999) add that these irreplaceable documents for around 45 Greek communities in Abkhazia included the only complete set of the Pontic Grek newspaper Kokinos Kapnas. This story is distressing, since records of my parent’s families in Yiashtoha and Portch, near Sohoumi could be lost forever.

A PONTIC GREEK HISTORY by Sam Topalidis, 2007 - Australia - p.140
---------------------------------

All you see that it was no accident that the Abkhazian research-institute and archives were torched (after cherry-picking), it was done to try to erase documentary proof of the Abkhazians' presence over the centuries (not to say millennia) on Abkhazian soil.
