The pro-American/pro-neocon that is, undemocratic regime of Michael Saakashvili (who is former New York lawyer and today's president (aka dictator) of Georgia) is now trying to destabilize Abkhazia by conductiong the covert opperations.

Why is he doing it? The US puppet Saakashvili believes that Abkhazia is a part of Georgia.


Following reports of a number of explosions in the central marketplace in Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia, the country’s authorities have called the act part of 'Georgia's terrorist war on Abkhazia.' The President Sergey Bagapsh says Georgia is ‘a country of terror’ and blames its special forces for the blasts.
According to Maksim Gvindzhia, Deputy Foreign Minister of Abkhazia, seven people have been injured and taken to hospital. He said some are believed to be critically injured, and there are unconfirmed reports of fatalities, but, Gvindzhia stressed they are as yet unconfirmed.
One Russian tourist is believed to be among the injured.

The explosions, which occurred early in the morning when the market was very crowded, are believed to have been caused by bombs hidden in bins.
It's the second such incident in two days. Six women were injured on Sunday in a blast in the city of Gagra.

Abkhazia is blaming Georgia for the explosions.

The Abkhaz President, Sergey Bagapsh, has announced that the breakaway republic will close its border with Georgia on July 1.

“These blasts are the work of Georgian special services. I’ve been saying for several years that it’s a country of terrorism. Their whole policy is based on terror, but we are going to fight it, and the situation will be under control. I can’t promise you that the same thing won’t happen tomorrow because anything is possible, but we’re taking all measures to find the terrorists.”
Meanwhile, Georgia say it's an internal issue.

What in the world would Georga have to gain in bombing a market? Why would they do that?

Of course that's probably a fair bit of Georgia's reason for wanting to keep them.

If it wasn't for the fact that they probably figure they'll be able to break away fairly cleanly I could see offering some kind of oil for independence offer where Georgia gets drilling rights but Abkhazia gets to be free. Though I don't know if they'd want independence without the oil wealth.

Georgia wants to find an excuse to start a war with Abkhazia all over again. (The first war took place in 1992, right after the break up of the USSR).
The first step is to create the kind of situation which would provoke Abkhazian side into making wrong moves. They (both Georgians and Abkhazians) are VERY emotional people.


A Short Chronicle of Events of the 1992-93 Georgian-Abkhazian War

August 14, 1992

Georgian troops enter Abkhazia, move through Gal, Ochamchira, and Gulripsh, and occupy the eastern corner of Sukhum.

August 18, 1992

Georgian troops take control of Sukhum. They remove the State flag from atop the Government House. In the Ochamchira region, which is in their hands, partisan bands actively oppose them. In the city of Grozny, the Parliament of the Congress of the Mountain Peoples of the Caucasus adopts a resolution to dispatch to Abkhazia groups of volunteer fighters.

August 25, 1992

The commander of the Georgian army, G. Qarqarashvili, issues an ultimatum: the Abkhaz are to halt their unsuccessful war within 24 hours. "Even if 100,000 out of the total number of Georgians perish," Qarqarashvili states, "we shall wipe out the entire population of you Abkhazians."




October 23, 1992
Georgian special forces in Sukhum burn down the state historical archive of Abkhazia and the archive of the Institute of Abkhazian language, history and literature.

December 14, 1992
Georgian troops in the village of Lata shoot down a Russian MI-8 helicopter with 60 passengers, including women and children, all of whom perish.

For some 60 years Abkhazia was forced to accept the unwelcome status of being a mere autonomous republic with Soviet Georgia (thanks to the ruling of the Georgian dictator Stalin – ‘Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili’). For daring to defend our interests in the face of Georgian nationalist aggression, we were subjected to 14 months of savagery. In alliance with our allies from the Abkhazian diaspora or Abkhazians’ cousins in the North Caucasus, we succeeded in ejecting the invader and winning the war. All that Georgia under its various leaders/governments has been willing to offer us by way of a settlement is a return to the ‘status quo ante’— the sudden offer by Misha Saakashvili of asymmetric federation produced on the eve of the recent NATO summit in Bucharest was clearly aimed more at impressing the Western alliance than at appealing to Sukhum.

How many examples are there in history where a people after being invaded, losing 4% of their population, and yet finally winning the war have meekly resigned themselves to accepting the selfsame subordinate status they had before the tragedy of a war inflicted upon them? This is something that the Georgian side and their international backers (who have no interest in the fate of minorities but think solely of the ‘big picture’ of preserving territorial integrity, of finding allies in an unstable part of the world, and of securing the flow of oil) would do well to remember. The Georgians lost Abkhazia in 1993. They should be told by their EU, NATO and US ‘friends’ to accept this fact, find a ‘modus vivendi’ with their neighbours (big and small alike), and then contribute to the creation of stability and prosperity for the Caucasus region as whole. We can all then get on with our lives in the peace that we all deserve.

...Additionally, the Commander-in-chief of Georgian troops in Abkhazia, General Georgiy Karkarashvili warned in a televised formal address to the Abkhaz and Georgian people in Sukhumi on August 24, that “no prisoners of war will be taken” by the Georgian troops, that “if 100,000 Georgian lose their lives, then [on the Abkhazian side] all 97,000 will be killed”; and that “the Abkhaz Nation will be left without descendants.” The delegation saw a video recording of this ominous speech.

...The Mission obtained sufficient evidence to conclude that gross and systematic violations of human rights had occurred at the hands of Georgian troops in Abkhazia throughout the period since August 14, 1992; that these included serious violations committed against Abkhazian and other ethnic population groups in cities and villages; that civilians were the primary victims of Georgian abuses; that Georgian attacks were directed against persons identifiable as Abkhazian, and that particular attack was directed against Abkhazian political, cultural, intellectual and community leaders; that in addition to Abkhazians, also Armenians, Russians, Greeks, Ukrainians, Estonians, and other non-Georgian minorities in Abkhazia have suffered similar treatment by Georgian authorities; and that removal or destruction of the principal materials and buildings of important historical and cultural importance to Abkhazians has taken place in what appears to be an organized attempt to destroy Abkhazian culture and national identity.

...When Georgian troops under general command of Defense Minister General Tengiz Kitovani first entered Sukhumi on August 14, Georgian soldiers attacked non-Georgian civilians, beat them, killed many, robbed them, and looted their houses and apartments. Reports of attacks on Abkhazian, Armenian, Russian, and other non-Georgian minority civilians, including killing, torture, and burning, looting or smashing of houses or other belongings, originate from many regions of Abkhazia under Georgian military control and for the entire period since August 14.

...Medical authorities in Gudauta reported that virtually all men who had come through the Gudauta hospital, after having been held prisoner by Georgian authorities, appeared to have been severely tortured. Many had sustained multiple broken bones and burns from cigarettes or other objects on various parts of their bodies. Some had their ears partially or completely torn off.

...The “out of control” explanation is not satisfactory, however, because evidence points to authorization or encouragement by the Georgian authorities forattacks on Abkhazian and other non-Georgian civilians. Georgian soldiers who are reported to have entered Abkhaz homes and to have beaten, raped, or otherwise terrorized the inhabitants and to have looted or destroyed their belongings, are repeatedly reported to have had a list with them of names and addresses of Abkhazians to visit in this manner.

...The attacks therefore did not appear to be at random. Georgian soldiers andpolice are reported to continue to ask persons in the streets, in particular in bread lines, to show their identity papers. When an Abkhaz is found he or she is seriously abused. The result is that the greatly diminished number of Abkhazians left in Sukhumi hardly dare to leave their rooms. Concerning the direction given by Georgian military authorities in relation to the conduct of battle and the behavior of troops during and after battle, Georgian Minister of Defense Kitovani is reported to have told his troops that under the law of war soldiers have the right to loot for three days. The Geneva Convention forbids the use of cluster bombs, yet Abkhazian medical authorities in Gudauta report having treated a number of cluster bomb wounds in victims brought from battle areas. Cluster bombs reportedly were used extensively during late August by Georgian forces and have continued sporadically since then.
