No, it is a Defense and ideological thing for me.

The missiles are not the ideal solution, they are merely a bandaid fix. The ideal solution would be to assimilate the rogue states into democracies, as we did with Iraq.

Or in the case of Russia keep them from backsliding.

To a degree that's a diplomacy thing. But to another it's just hoping they can get their economy going strong and have the Russian people demand more freedom of the press and the like down the road.

I don't think Socialism is necessarily evil. Seems a bit harsh to wish them dead.
Europe is predominately Socialist and while they may hate America, they aren't blowing themselves up in public markets in the name of Socialism.
Canada is also Socialist. Not exactly an evil regime.

Medvedev: U.S. aggravating Eastern Europe

Russia will be forced to appropriately respond if the U.S. aggravates Eastern Europe by deploying its controversial missile defence system, President Dmitry Medvedev has told Russian diplomats. Medvedev has called for a truly open security system in the Euro-Atlantic zone.

"The deployment of elements of the U.S. global missile defence system in Eastern Europe is only aggravating the situation. We will have to respond appropriately and our American and European partners have already been warned," Medvedev said.

Medvedev stressed both Russia and the U.S. share responsibility for preserving strategic stability.

“It’s clear our common legacy cannot be kept if one of the sides destroys selective elements of this strategic structure. It doesn’t suit us,” Medvedev said.

Yeah go ahead and make some missile defense. You've got the oil money. We aren't planning to attack Russia at any rate. So long as neither of us messes much with the MAD situation.
