Eight Foreigners Die on Roads in Serbia
Belgrade _ Six people, including two children, died when a Polish bus crashed on a motorway in northern Serbia on Friday, police confirmed.
In a separate accident, only couple of hours later, two Turks died on another motorway in the south.
The bus, carrying 68 people on their way back from a holiday in neighboring Bulgaria, turned over on the Belgrade – Novi Sad motorway earlier Friday.
In addition to the two children, one woman and three men died in the accident.
Seven more people, including two children are seriously hurt, while a further 31 suffered minor injuries. An investigation is under way and police have not yet said what caused the crash.
Jozef Zepka, the owner of the transport company Moan from Ruda Slaska in Poland, said that according to the driver’s statement, the accident most probably happened when his co-driver asked him to switch off the lights. The company assumes that that diverted the driver’s attention after which he lost control of the bus.
According to the travel agency which organised the holiday the bus was technically in order.
In a separate incident, on the motorway linking Belgrade to the Serbian southern city of Nis a Turkish driver apparently fell asleep and his car first hit the protection fence and then smashed into a concrete pillar dividing the motorway’s lanes. The third passenger, also from Turkey, was injured.
