Default Radovan Karadzic arrested

One of the two most famous Hague Tribnual suspects, Radovan Karadzic, ex-leader of Bosnian Serbs, is arrested.

That's the latest news I heard on Serbian TV B92, but there was no additional information.

Things will be clearer in the next few hours.

Of course it's positive, it's been positive since Milosevic was done in 2000.

But that "get on your knees" crap seems amusing to you and you only.

Unlike Kosovo, where war criminals and mafia kingpins are in power, Serbia arrests and sends criminals to trials.

And the official news:

Quote:
Radovan Karadžić arrested
21 July 2008 | 23:30 -> 23:59 | Source: B92, Beta, Tanjug

BELGRADE -- Hague Tribunal's war crimes indictee Radovan Karadžić has been arrested, the War Crimes Prosecution has confirmed.

According to an earlier Beta news agency report, the announcement came this evening from President Boris Tadić's press service, which quoted Serbia's Council for National Security.

The raid was conducted by the Serbian security forces and the war-time leader of the Bosnian Serbs has been taken to a judge with the War Crimes Court in Belgrade, the statement said.

However, the location and time of Karadžić's arrest, as well as other details officially remain unknown at this point. But Beta quotes "reliable sources" who said the former president of the Republic of Srpska was arrested this evening in Belgrade.

In the meantime, Interior Ministry (MUP) issued a statement tonight that said its officers "did not take part in locating or arresting Karadžić", without elaborating any further. This was also confirmed by the new interior minister, Ivica Dačić, SPS.

State television RTS has reported that MUP's elite Žandarmerija (Gendarmerie) are out in force tonight securing the Special Court building. This television also broadcast footage of Karadžić's brother Luka entering the court's premises.

A large number of reporters have gathered there, but policemen in full riot gear are keeping them across the street from the court building, Beta says.

Luka Karadžić spent a short while inside, and told journalists as he exited the premises that "as far as he knew", Radovan Karadžić had not been brought there.

He also said he learned about the arrest from the media.

In Holland, Chief Hague Prosecutor Serge Brammertz, who is due to visit Belgrade on Tuesday, late on Monday welcomed the news of Karadžić's arrest.

"My colleagues in Belgrade have informed me about a successful action the outcome of which was the arrest of Radovan Karadžić," a statement from the Tribunal said.

Brammertz congratulated the authorities in Serbia on behalf of the Hague Tribunal.

"This is a very important day for the victims who have awaited this arrest for over a decade. This is also an important day for international justice, because it clearly shows that no one is above the law and that all fugitives will face justice sooner or later," the statement said.

Kradžić, who is charged with committing genocide in Bosnia during the 1992-1995 war in that country, was first indicted on July 24, 1995.

Before the international warrant was issued for his arrest, Karadžić was last seen and photographed in July 1996 in Han Pijesak, Bosnia.

The UN war crimes court in The Hague on several occasions claimed to have had information that showed he was in Serbia "at least from time to time", and that in 2004 he was located in Belgrade.

At the same time the Tribunal claimed with certainty that another war crimes fugitive, Ratko Mladić, lives in Serbia.

The arrest brings the number of war crimes suspects still at large to two names: Mladić, and Goran Hadžić, one of the former Croatian Serb leaders.

It's very well known who protected him. It's the same guy who advised him to abandon politics back in 1995: former high US official Richard Holebrooke.

listen man, i know its a bit hard to admit but until a week ago all serbs were against any compromise with the icc. and now you view this as a great news. as for get on your knees, i mean it only the radicals that thought nikolic is the saviour of the myths.

And you should know about the law man first, the burden to of proof rests on the prosecution, i agree with you and all the people of the world that criminals should be charged, but if you got no evidence or sufficient evidence, accusations fly from one ear in to the other out. Blame your serbian lawyers that could not bring a sufficient enough discovery against these "criminal" kosovars. maybe you should study law and appeal the verdict, but i dont have any hope that there will be any major finding. it was sad that in the slovakian bosnian and croatian war serbs were accusing their own neighbours of bombing killing looting and raping their own people, those lies had short legs and we are here today because of that.

all the best finding mladic, cooperate with icc, engage with eu and improve relations with your new neighbour, you know deep inside that it will happen.
and as a int law supporter you should sponsor this way.
