Unfortunately, ground based detection systems are only a small part of the equation. The infra-red satellite detection is basically unbeatable, we are going to see any launch. I am sure we can track that heat signature and since the system is designed to defeat the missiles while in the boost phase, radar stealth probably won't be enough and you simply are not going to hide a fireball like a rocket engine from infra-red detection. In other words, just like Russia's stealth technology for planes, it has a lot of problems as a long way to go to really be effective.

It's kind of like having a stealth train. Just because we can't see it on radar, that doesn't mean we can't tell where it is going.

Yes, we can probably track a missile launch from it's heat signature the actual intercept depends upon radar tracking. The intercept occurs in the ballistic phase (i.e. unpowered) of flight and there isn't a heat signature at that time. It there isn't a radar lock on the target the chances of intercept are zero and defeating radar isn't all that hard.

I dont know if you guys know that the world is round and that means that most of the Russian missiles wont even fly over the target area of that missile shield in Poland.
The issue is not about how usefull it is but it is all about location and treaty's that were being signed.

The closer to the point of launch, the easier to shoot down. The idea is to shoot them down while in the boost phase, before they separate. That way you get all the warheads at once, defeating MRV's. Yes, most missiles would come over the pole, but we can still shoot them down with missiles in Poland.Once they are over the US, it's too late. I have to assume that somewhere in Alaska and Canada there will be other missiles, as well as the west coast of the US, the pacific islands and Japan. The ten or eleven sites in Poland are just a small part of the whole system.

Would that make the shield less effective?

China having most of it's assets in the USA might be bad news for the Bolsheviks unless you believe that the Chinese will stand by and watch their assets being destroyed?
