Default I don't think you understand what the offer is

Here, let me try an analogy...

Boris is out taking a walk. It was a nice day, but clouds over and threatens to rain any minute. Boris is approached by Steve, an American businessman. Steve offers Boris an umbrella... just in case it rains. Boris is suspicious so he refuses. Steve asks why. Boris tells him that he doesn't trust Americans, and besides... even if he used Steve's umbrella, his shoes would still get wet.

Wouldn't Boris' feet get wet WITHOUT the umbrella? At least with the umbrella, Boris' head and clothes would stay relatively dry. If the umbrella has a pinhole leak and Boris' shoulder gets wet, should he punch Steve for selling a defective umbrella?

If Iran fires off a nuclear tipped ballistic missile and the target is Russia, wouldn't you prefer the missile come down in pieces rather than it actually hit its target city? Either way the scenario plays out it hits Russia, but at least with a Missile Defense shield you might actually protect some of your citizens.

If you don't want the Shield, fine. Take the nuclear devastation like a man. With a shield you might stand a chance, but there are still no guarantees. Personally, I prefer playing the odds in my favor and forget the national pride.

In the extremely unlikely event that a future Iran fires one of its precious few nuclear missiles directly into an area covered by a missile defense shield... the missile would be destroyed before there were any nuclear explosion. There would be no "nuclear splinters" falling into Russia, only radioactive material. Putting myself in your place -- given the prospect of having such material fall into the US vs. having Moscow or St. Petersburg destroyed, I think the decision would be an easy one. The death of dozens versus the death of millions.

It seems to me that the only reasonable reason for opposing the missile defense shield (from Russia's perspective) is that it limits your defensive capabilities.

That is like me recomending you to visit NYC to get a feel for America. It's just silly.

Did you mean `offensive` capabilities?

There is also a reasonable concern that in nullifying a nuclear threat..destabilising the concept of MAD...the risk of conventional warfare is increased.

I guess that depends on who's at the reins.

You wouldn't want to fall victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia", but only slightly less well known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian, when *death* is on the line!" Hahahahahah.
