Chief propagandist for Al Qaeda in Iraq killed, U.S. military says
By Edmund Sanders and Tina Susman, Times Staff Writers
9:42 AM PDT, May 3, 2007

BAGHDAD -- U.S. military officials said today their forces had killed the chief propagandist for Al Qaeda in Iraq, a man they say smuggled in money and foreign fighters and helped orchestrate the kidnappings of Westerners, including journalist Jill Carroll and slain peace activist Tom Fox.
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...tory?track=rss

Caldwell said U.S. forces, acting on a tip, launched a 2 a.m. raid on a cluster of buildings near Taji, north of the capital. Jubouri was killed with four other insurgents when they resisted arrest, Caldwell said. His identify was confirmed with DNA testing Wednesday.

Caldwell said confusion arose after U.S. officials released his body to members of his tribe to take home for burial. When the tribe member who was transporting Jubouri's body reached an Iraqi checkpoint, Iraqi police identified the corpse as a possible suspect on their most wanted list. Iraqi officials, unaware that U.S. officials had just released Jubouri's body, seized the corpse and excitedly notified U.S. officials they had captured a "high-value" suspect.

That set off Iraqi government and media reports that Baghdadi was dead.

IOW someone nearly a important from al Qaeda is dead in IRAQ.

Default Missing the Point

As usual, focusing on the capture/killing of one or another mid-level Al Qaeda figure misses the point.

From that well-known left-wing rag, US News and World Report...

When the current head of DIA, Lt. Gen. Michael Maples, visited Capitol Hill this year, he warned that the group's leaders are resilient and are actively plotting from their new base in Pakistan. "Al Qaeda retains the ability to organize complex, mass-casualty attacks and inspire others," Maples said. "Al Qaeda has consistently recovered from losses of senior leadership."

Damage control. The spy agencies' shift was driven by al Qaeda's resurgence as well as new information they had obtained about its deep involvement in recent terrorist plots. Privately, U.S. officials concede that they had overestimated the damage they had inflicted on al Qaeda's network. The captures of successive operational commanders, including 9/11 planner Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, amounted only to temporary setbacks; they were replaced with disturbing ease. "We understand better how al Qaeda is withstanding the offensive that was launched against it in 2001 and later," says a senior U.S. government official.

As long as you ignore the reports from our own intelligence agencies that say the war in Iraq has bolstered the ranks of Al Qeada.

Which reports are those? The few studies I've read paint the picture differently -- al Qaeda as a highly selective organization that recruits through family connections. Most are young and don't develop intense western hatred until they are indoctrinated in training camps. The "you killed my brother, I'm joining al Qaeda" line doesn't seem to hold water.

Well, of course they will. No matter who you are, anywhere, once you die or stop doing what you are doing someone will jump right in and replace you.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. No one knows that and I personally don't think that's true. Besides that, so what if al Qaeda's ranks have been swelled. The ranks of your enemy swell in every war. Something like that shouldn't make you afraid, leaving the region at this time should though.

you see, this is the whole problem with the games involving 'respawning'.

I don't think it's a matter of us enduring the swelling of our enemys' ranks but the matter of how many of our enemy are we killing. I want to see our soldiers arms and trigger fingers ache from over-use!! I want them to grow weary of killing with enough stanley blood spilt to float a boat. It's expected an enemy with a cause will grow in numbers but our job is to find them and waste 'em. If you can't find the enemy or don't have enough men to kill them, it certainly helps bring the campaign to a halt.
