Turkey is undergoing a military coup. The current Prime Minister is an Authoritarian Hardliner, who is likely to be removed. http://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/turkey/1.731225 Turkey has NATO Nuclear Weapons, though they supposedly under the control of foreign command codes. What does this mean for America? -
Turkey does not have independent access to nukes. The only NATO nuclear base in Turkey is Incirlik and that is US operated.
I don't know if anyone in the West has a clue ATM. I certainly couldn't find any concrete details. We know certain bridges are out, shots fired by ground troops at the main airport, and low flying military helicopters and jets have been seen over the capital. -
should be interesting to see what this means for refugees flowing through as well as terrorists coming and going... is someone finally deciding to secure their borders and transportation facilities and put an end to refugees and terrorists? they have been increasing security the past few days already, so is this a real coup or just overzealous military commanders taking extra steps they should not have to secure the country? I mean if they've secured sights, then all they have to do is wrangle up the leadership, but I haven't heard of any leaders being taken into custody or even threatened with that, so coup or no coup?
The effect, if true, will be the American press and media will use it to basically cause a news blackout on the Republican convention.
It's against the corrupt government. It's happened before and Turkey was better for it. The last one was by General Evren in 1980. I think this will be the 4th time it's happened.
This is a good thing, and the US should actively help the rebels. Ankara as it is, is a proxy for terrorist support groups. Mostly because the present Turkey PM is supportive of the idea of a Caliphate and has moved in that direction. Making Turkey more free and prosperous should be the goal. As we learned from Egypt however, a military takeover of the government is far from "democratic" or even considering of human rights. But it's a start. A very low starting point.
I wonder: does a coup count as an attack for the purpose of NATO? Could the PM invoke the treaty to force NATO to help put down the coup?
(*)(*)(*)(*) Democracy. As long as I see more terrorists coming to Europe I am all for a good thick handed Dictator. For some reason I get a bitter taste when seeing americans talk about democracy. It usually doesn't end up good.
I agree. I think a coup could work out in America's favor. However, with the current bozos in charge, they'll probably (*)(*)(*)(*) it up somehow. Or back the wrong people.

Looks like they want Erdogan out. This is what these guys had up in this thread. I dropped my link too. http://www.politicalforum.com/lates...ctivies-turkish-military-istanbul-ankara.html
What's at stake: http://fas.org/blogs/security/2015/09/nuclear-insecurity/ Evidently a number of B61 Nuclear Bombs.
That would be a very scary precedent and may even cause ripples within NATO itself. As we've seen with Brexit, it only takes one pebble to cause a shift in policy. Interesting times we're living in.
Go figure. A Russian who doesn't like democracy and is cool with dictatorship. - - - Updated - - - Under the positive control of the US military. They would have to commit an act of war against the US to seize them.
