The past few years has shown that atheists are made up of a majority of males. Also it has been shown that when women attend functions not only are they under represented in the ranks they are sometimes harassed. There was one incident that occurred involving a young feminist named Rebecca Watson. It became known as Elevatorgate:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebecca_Watson

Ms Watson wrote about her experience at the convention and Richard Dawkins wrote this as a reply:

    http://www.rationalwiki.org/wiki/Ri...acy_of_relative_privation_went_into_overdrive

So is not respecting women by scoffing at them and practically telling them to shut their mouth something that doesn't fall within the realm of that instinctive morality atheists claim humans have?

What about making threats of rape and death? Is that something humans just don't know instinctively is wrong?

Well no wonder these atheist conventions are lacking females if this is how they are treated.

Dawkins told her to grow up. A guy asked her back to his hotel room and suddenly this means atheists are misogynistic?

Are you new to the Internet?

People were making fun of her because being hit on in an elevator is not sexism. Then people on the internet started harassing her because they thought she was stupid for blowing the issue out of proportion. This happens routinely and isn't relegated to the domain of atheism.

Yes pretty much you described doomybuggy.

He is a militant anti atheist who spins twists and grasps at any straw he can to try and blame atheists for SOMETHING.

His response to you will be atheist apologists are hilarious

Did you not read the OP? It clearly states Ms. Watson was speaking about the problem of sexism and atheists....Man, those atheist conventions must be real sausage fests!

Even your article shows clearly that the alleged rape and death threats came from around the internet. Yes some people on the internet make such threats. Usually christians. No where in your article does it show them to be atheists making such threats against watson.

No one told her to shut up either Dawkins was correct she was asked out and she declined and that was that. Then she gets mad in a childish ( somewhat typically feminist ) manner.

    Get over it already.

BTW there is no atheist movement.

along with some 'hahaha's, a comical emoti, and a claim of victory.

if he ain't a poe - he's either 14 years old, or standing on a slippery incline of about 45 degrees, with god at the top, and atheism at the foot.

I know all about the issue. And per your OP:

"Among the topics in a vlog posted following her return from the trip, she described how after the talk and extended discussion with a group of attendees, a man from the group followed her into an elevator and asked her back to his hotel room."

Being hit on is not sexism. That is why she was ridiculed.

Really? Were you there? No you weren't and this young woman was upset enough about it to say something. Apparently sexism is a big problem within the atheists group.

trying to get laid at a convention .... never happened before in the history of mankind! but even still, I'm sure it did come about as a result of atheism. after all, atheism is known to cause people to dance nude on coffee tables and slaughter kittens. not necessarily in that order.

your deflection via demonisation is pleasingly rudimentary, but that doesn't mean you should rest on your comic laurels. get out there and read some decent apologetics - for our sake, if not your own.

Why would I need to have been there to say that being hit on in an elevator is not sexism? Is it not possible that she is simply seeking attention? Causing a ruckus doesn't mean what she said was true. Her example of being hit on in an elevator is evidence that she threw a tantrum for attention.

And I don't equate one woman's complaints to a "big problem".

I do believe that any guy attending one of those conventions has never been laid before in the history of mankind, yes

Well I don't doubt that 'atheist conventions' are 'magnets' for nerdy guys with awful pickup lines trying to get laid and smoke pot (kind of like Occupy Rallies)

But that doesn't mean I'm going to jump in bed with some feminist either and believe anything she says - a lot of them are just crew-cut wearing skanks who're full of sexual frustration

granted there's an element of unprepossessing geek at these gigs, but overall they probably do considerably better in terms of lady bits than do a conference of congressing conservative christians. the four Cs = no rumpy pumpy.

You would think with the natural born morality atheists believe we have they would naturally treat women with respect and dignity......guess not.

Blame it on "atheists" stereotyping themselves - because if you look at a "convention" you'd think that every atheist has to love Star Trek/Star Wars/RPG video games/Japanese anime/etc/and wear nerdy science teeshirts.

Kind of like how gay pride rallies stereotype gays as flamboyant attention whores, and perpetuate the negative stereotypes

you did it too! called them nerds :D how's the weather, back there in the 50's?

meantime, how is being a geek (atheist or otherwise) a negative? it expresses a gently anarchic, liberal, and progressive approach to politics and modern life, an interest in science and pop culture, and carries with it a good dollop of street cred. which of those aspects of geekdom do you consider a 'bad' thing, dear?

or do you just have a problem with black t-shirts and beards?

Let's assume Rebecca Watson was raped in an elevator by a militant atheist, how does that prove a god is real?

Or better yet, how does that prove that all atheist are depraved enemies of humanity. >>> queue up a trite, five word answer...here>>>

So you believe it is perfectly OK to harass and demean women? Sad.....where is that natural moral compass atheists claim you were born with?

    No it really is not.

As with 99% of your claims it is something you dreamed up out of thin air.
