    These guys suck :D, and I'm not sure that LOG is accurately described as metalcore, I think they're more akin to thrash.

    Awesome guitar work throughout, one of those great metal pieces that finds the balance between heavy and chilled.

    I would have described LOG as being 'Groove Metal', along with things like Pantera, Machine Head, DevilDriver, etc..

    I would have said things like this were 'Metalcore':
    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuQW1vkDA1c"]Bring Me The Horizon - Visions[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw2UBzklfc4"]Parkway Drive - Boneyards[/ame]

    I don't have a problem with metalcore, though - I don't see why some people see it as being so 'unmetal'.

    Testament was actually the band that launched me into metal. I grew up listening to Ozzy, Dio, Scorpions, UFO, and others, but it wasn't until I heard the following song that I decided to jump head first into the genre.

    Metalcore is this generations metal knockoff. A few years ago it was "Nu-metal" with Korn, Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber, and the rest of those kinds of bands. Back in the 80's it was hair metal. I dislike these genres because they take the style of real metal and they infuse a bunch of crap into it to make it more commercially palatable to the mainstream. These bands start making a ton of money, and it sometimes causes good bands to stray away from real metal.

    Take a look at what happened to In Flames because of the explosion of metalcore.

    Then:

    Same here, it's still easily identifiable as metal, and plenty of it sounds really good.

    The only time I start doubting metal credentials, is when a band starts aggressively adding punk/ska, hip hop/electronica, or begins to sound contemporary 'hard rockish'.

    I think Testament is a bit underrated. I think I'd rather listen to random Testament songs vs random Metallica/Slayer/Megadeath songs.

    Very few of the 2nd wave thrash bands even came close to the success that some of the 1st wavers enjoyed. It makes sense, though. By the time Testament's first album released in 1987, thrash was already at its peak, and had nowhere to go but down, and it went down fast in less than 4 years. Some of Testament's contemporaries are bands like Heathen, Forbidden, Vio-lence, Defiance, Atrophy, and many many others. None of these bands really came close to the mainstream, but they enjoyed success within the genre.

    Megadeth is one of my favorite bands, but I definitely agree with what you are saying. Most of Metallica's "classic" stuff simply bores me, nowadays. Maybe I've listened to it too much, but a lot of their stuff is too long, too repetitive, and it just doesn't have very good replay value. As for Slayer, I only like their first several albums. Anything after that wasn't really that great, in my opinion.

    It doesn't bother me. There have always been these new trends that come, get hated, and then gradually integrate into the whole scene and become accepted, but I think you need some of that to keep things fresh and stop it all becoming stale and samey. A bit of a new angle on things can give people something different to work with and blend into their style, which is good.

    Without metalcore, and the following developments that blended it with prog rock and metal ideas of musicianship and experimentation, we wouldn't have interesting stuff like this:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLEAztt6jEc"]Between The Buried and Me - Ants of the Sky[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mznFkrxS8u8"]The Human Abstract - Nocturn[/ame]

    And without others trying to be creative in blending stuff together to make something new, we wouldn't have other interesting stuff this:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsQhuxPsSjE"]Skindred - Nobody[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTlLHORbMPM"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTlLHORbMPM[/ame]

    There's plenty of room for new ideas.

    Sorry, we're never going to agree on this. 99% of metalcore is simply recycled At the Gates riffs mixed with lame Hatrebreed style breakdowns. Any potential creative new sounds could have been achieved by going to the source bands that metalcore bands unreservedly steal from. Both the bands and fans look like emo scenesters, almost worse than the hair metal bands back in the 80's. Hair metal was not retained within the general metal genre after it died, and nu-metal has all but been forgotten. I suspect metalcore will die the same way when the next metal wannabe genre rears its ugly head. These copycat genres do not make metal better, and people are starting to realize it. Thrash pretty much disappeared in the 90's, but it has had a huge comeback within the last 10 years, thanks to people collectively realizing how terrible the genre was becoming due to metalcore and nu-metal.

    68' I was into the world, born
    And the seventies were a breath after the war (Vetnam)
    Life was confusing because of my age
    Should my eyes open for tomorrows gains
    I can't help the way I am
    There's no trust and there's no end
    What is my name

    (chorus) It's time for a change
    It can't stay the same
    Forever is my name

    From now on I can't look the other way
    But keep in mind, and listen to what I say
    Take underwing all the ones who are lost
    And build up around them an infinite wall
    Don't you know just who I am
    Take the hand of the wisdoms friend

    Yup - I see things a little differently. I think both Hair Metal and Nu Metal, rather than dying and disappearing, just got absorbed and accepted - the mediocre stuff from both sub-genres is thankfully mostly forgotten, but the best of it just became accepted, and integrated, and is still very much around. Bands like Korn and Slipknot came very much out of the Nu Metal scene, but are still very much alive, and now considered part of the 'mainstream' of metal, and of the whole Glam/Hair metal lot bands like Motley Crue have been having a bit of a resergence in popularity over the last decade or so (some of that is obviously just nostalgia, but it's pretty popular nostalgia nonetheless), and some of what they were doing is in evidence in newer bands like Black Veil Brides.

    As for the whole emo fashion thing, it all looks a bit silly to me, but then I'm old (and still have my old denim jacket covered with band patches!)! It doesn't bother me, though - for a genre that has so prided itself over the decades for not 'conforming' to the norms of general society popularism in its internal 'fashions' to be dismissing something else that is non-conformist in a similar way for being 'different' from them just seems a little bit daft to me.

    I just think there should be room for all of the new trends to come and go in peace without the attacks from the 'old school'. It was all 'new' and 'different' once (and dismissed on that basis by 'traditionalists' - many 70's people didn't like NWOBHM, and NWOBHM didn't like thash, and so on), and I in particular remember a time when 'metalheads', 'goths' and 'punks' would never been seen to be associating with one another. Better for all of these kinds of 'alternative' type genres (and the newer ones, and all the sub-branches of 'metal'), with all of their similarities, to get along with one another without feelings of defiance or protectionism towards each other - there are enough people in society determined to attack anything vaguely 'metal', 'rock' or 'alternative' just for not being 'fashionable' in their eyes anyway!

    It doesn't mean we all actually have to like everything that's happening musically, of course - that would be silly. Personally I'm prepared to give anything a go, though (irrespective of 'fashion', 'scene' or sub-genre), and decide whether I like it on the basis of listenign to it. There's plenty that's become popular within 'metal', or with 'metal' fans at least, that I don't like (anything 'grunge', for example). I'm happy to 'live and let live' about it, though - when I go to a rock/metal festival, if something I don't like is on, I just go to another stage (thankfully that's an opinion these days - the old 'sit in a field and watch what you're given, whether you like it or not' festival days are long over!) rather than complaining about it being there (as some people do, and get pretty nasty about at times!).

    As far as I'm concerned, there's plenty of room under the broad banner of 'heavy metal' for anything that's pretty much 'metalic' in its basis, and new ideas keep things refreshed. As much as I love the album, it would be a pretty dull world if all that was ever made in the name of 'metal' was re-hashed versions of 'Number of the Beast'!

    Anyway, enough of the philosophy! Having mentioned festivals, here's a few memorable moments from festivals for me:
