Didn't the Chinese launch as many satellites as we did last year? Chinese version of GPS?

They launched a total of 16 satellites last year.

The US launched 18 or 21, depending on how you count them.

There were 17 launched from within the US, primarily for the US military and government, but also some others on contract.

Then you have 1 that were launched by Boeing from SeaLaunch. This is a converted oil platform that launches satellites. However in 2010 the company was bought by Russia, so most of it's operations have since moved to Russia (which has seen a giant increase in the number of birds launched from there)

Then you have the 3 Space Shuttle launches, thise may or may not count, so I am giving the choice to include them or not.

Either way, the US still launched more. And a lot of the Chinese birds are for their future GPS system. Which is yet to become fully operational. The US does not need to launch as many, since it's GPS system has been in place for decades.

    Thanks for the info.

I remember the days before Loral helped the Chinese learn to get payloads into orbit.

Well the PLAN are certainly spending a lot on modernizing their Navy, their overall ship numbers will be about the same in 2020 as of today, but they would of replaced most of their old 'junk' warships (junk!....get it....never mind: :)

In other words, in 2020 they will be much stronger than they are now. This will probably be matched (as much as economically possible) by other countries, such as Korea, Japan, India, etc.

China has made some friends and allies in Central and South America and the Caribbean. The U.S. has its friends and allies in South-East Asia. Now China alleges the U.S. is trying to polarize South-East Asia (forcing countries there to choose sides) and secure its resources for itself or its allies leaving others out, while countries like Japan and Philippines have previously alleged that China wishes to turn the South China Sea into its own lake. What China lacks to secure its interests in the Pacific is a formidible navy. So sure enough, it will try to militarize in that direction to go after what it alleges is a frequently illegal offshore drilling in the South China Sea operated by multinational companies.
