I would say that's an unusually high percentage for a "first" world country.

A very long freaking time! The problem the US has is, that there are just far too many scared people. And scared people are easily manipulated by the powers that be.

I sincerely hope this is a joke, but it would not surprise me if it was not.

When the crazies turn out to be right we can all live on happily on flying pigs and the green-cheese moon. Fair play, it is an amazing achievement of American capitalism to keep millions messing their trousers on a daily basis and screaming support for their masters as they do it.

If you're not fearful of the future, you're not paying attention.

Well how convenient. A scare mongering statement, with no depth whatsoever.

    BRILLIANT!

I am not prepared at all. I still have a lot to fulfill. You can lock yourself away, waiting for the end, if you want, but be nice, don't urge anything.

Our civil liberties are all but gone and the government owes upwards of $60 trillion in unfunded liabilities. If it's creditors dump US debt and the US is forced to meet its obligations by printing money, hyperinflation is not outside the realm of possibility and, after that, martial law, a blackout of the internet, and who knows what else.

How do these people survive being locked in a shed from the outside world? The smell must be horrible from all those baked beans.

America stresses individualism more than most. In some ways, this is a good thing. In other ways, it can lead to paranoia.

We also have a high percentage of religious people that subscribe to doomsday philosophies and people who still have some of that old Cold War paranoia.

Then there's of course the more modern paranoia generated by the War on Terror.

In the late 50's and early 60's the government run schools had children diving under desks to hide from a nuclear attack from Russia. There is a difference? Oh yes, one was government sanctioned.

Prepping is not locking one's self away in a shed in the woods. I live well and comfortable, and I manage to enjoy lifes pleasures. BUT, I also believe my well being, and that of my family is MY responsibility. So I prep. There are two basic kinds of preppers, the Rambo type, and what I like to call the Farmer Jones type, of which I am the latter. Sustainability of resources, reduction on relying on others, and cost savings. What could be wrong with that? Now, if I'm wrong, I have lots of cheaply acquired, first quality, healthy, non GMO / chemical and preservative laden food on hand, and more growing and raising every day, along with the means to prepare and store it. If YOU are wrong, you are going to die a slow, painful, miserable, death. Starvation, dehydration, and sickness REALLY sucks! You don't think in CAN happen here? I hope you're right. But I wouldn't bet on it.

I agree, what strikes me as making america unique is that it seem to have the highest concentration of such crazies, than any other country, especially , as you rightly stated , regarding religious doomsday /end times believers.

I would say Im a bit of both...Rambo, and Farmer Jones :D

It amazes me how many people think life on this planet is somehow going to get 'all better' with a new president....it's getting bad, and it's not just bad, it's bad on expessso.

Here is an interesting vid from 2010:

    End of Liberty

Yep. I understand the why's and wherefore's, but in my mind they don't mitigate the reality of the amount of nutters you have. Moreover, if I lived in the US, I'd be very concerned about the level of "fear" in your society. I just don't want to live my life like that; we as human beings should learn to roll with the punches. Life is unpredictable and the world is and alsways has been a dangerous place. We cannot control it, we can only try to guide it.
