We have thousands upon thousands of low level criminal infesting our prisons. Put them to work and on the payroll. It'll keep BILLIONS of US dollars in the US and these criminals will earn money and save the taxpayers a ton of money as well. Of course I'm sure the 'brown shirt' liberals and ACLU will scoff at this. But then again that's why this country has gotten so weak.

    Show them the constitution:

    13th amendment:

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

It's a very good idea. The people who have harmed society in such a way that they get incarcerated SHOULD be giving something back to that society. They could earn a little money...less than the current illegals even which helps the farmers profits, and they could give back to those who are keeping them housed and fed. On top of that it's healthy exercise.

    Very good idea IMO.

Using our inmates to supplement labor for infrastructure projects would provide incredible support AND teach valuable skills to those who wish to retain it. It's a massive opportunity that isn't utilized.

So how do we pay to move all of these prisons and prisoners to where the farms are?

Don't think it would work, but a more realistic answer is to tell someone who is on welfare that they now have a job and if they refuse it, the welfare stops.
If there are unemployed on welfare, and the farmers need labor, it's time for the Department of Workforce Solutions to do their job and get them working.

Great idea making criminals work off their crimes against society. Has all the benefits of slavery but without the guilty conscience.

Your average criminal high school dropout dirt bag HIV infested turd will not be able to perform even 1% of the jobs required for infrastructure upgrade.

I can see criminal punks picking pumpkins grabbing grapes or tossing tomatoes but skilled labor?

I dunno. The prisoners pay for their own housing and transportation out of their wages... just like everyone else does?

Or the famers could just pay a wage high enough to attract citizens to those jobs.

So until they make enough to do that, are they just going to be living on the street next to these farms hundreds of miles from where there prison is?

I like the idea of criminals working to try and compensate their victims and society but it will only be practical for low skill jobs. They will literally have to be treated as slaves in that most will need to be chained up to each other or a thether. They will need to have RF chips implanted inside their bodies so if they escape they can be tracked and hunted down like the dangerous animals that they are. We will also need to accept that a certain percentage will be killed trying to escape or during the recapture process. They will also need to have thise electronic colors that are activated to give them a shock to subdue them when they act up on the job or they are not performing fast enough. That is fine with me because a lot of them should have been killed fir their crimes anyway.

Is there any farm in the US that's "hundreds of miles from a prison"?

Here are just the private prisons:

I am 100% sure that the private prison industry would be happy to set up more if there were sufficient demand.

Also if we are going to use prisoners as de facto slave labor, then the products they are producing should be sold at cost. No one should be allowed to make private profits off slave labor in America.

    - - - Updated - - -

The last thing we want is more private prisons. The moral hazard of them is absurdly high and is a direct threat to freedom.

Do you think for a second those prisoners will actually get paid at the going rate for farm labor? The PRISON might get that money, but the prisoners likely wouldn't see even a tenth of it.

If you are forced to work and do not have a choice, it is slave labor.

Well in that sense, it would still be cheaper to pay for transportation than to give them free housing, medical care, food, television, phones, and games courtesy of the tax payer. The prisoner then becomes privatized.

The last thing America needs more of is privatized prisons and prisoners.

I honestly see that as a much better solution compared to keeping them in cages that will just breed more anger. They could work privately, earn money, and contribute to society. Or we can take your way and keep them locked in a cage with each other draining tax payer money. Lose lose, eh?

The OP is about paying them to do farm labor and your claim that they wouldn't get paid is the usual attempt by leftist at deflecting and obfuscation.

You seriously don't see the problem with attaching a profit incentive to putting people in prison when those private prison corporations have the power to bankroll "tough on crime" judges, lobby for stricter sentencing, and lobby against decriminalization of victimless crimes?

I'm fine with making prisoners work, but their work should be solely for the benefit of society at large (like infrastructure projects or cleaning highways) or the maintenance of themselves (like a prison farm whose proceeds feed the prisoners), but prisoners absolutely should not be used for private profits.
