Anything liberal in nature gets a large majority of Americans calling it socialism commie pinko (Archie Bunker) propaganda. Like Universal healthcare. Any civilized nation has aspects of socialism. So why the extreme reaction & over classification of liberal thoughts and universal ideas as socialism? And social = evil.

Why the non want to help your fellow citizen in So many easy aspects out of fear of that word?

Socialism inevitably leads to totalitarianism, KGB/Cheak/Gestapo and gulag/Auschwitz.

    That seems sufficient to me.

universal healthcare provided by the state is socialist so I don't at all understand your point. As is minimum wage laws, unemployment benefits et cetera. The question is really why you are assuming that those things are liberal in nature when they are in fact socialist.

And then we have the socialist scandinavian countries, the best example of totalitarian socialism.

You might look at Greece and many other European countries today and maybe that might answer your question.

I again refer to the scandinavian countries, which by the way are far more socialist than the greeks could ever hope to be.

It is your talking head leaders who have you beleiving it is fear of the word, when in fact it is understanding of the impracticality of every liberal initiative presented that scares people.

I think you are wrong in your assumption that it is a large majority
I think it is A loud minority
Who would say anything to gain political power for conservatives
I think the 2012 elections prove this point

A win by roughly 49%, that is your proof. Edit/Unnecessary comment

The fact that you think 50.4% is vastly better than 49% made me laugh out loud.
There is NOW a majority of Americans who are dissatisfied with Obama as commander in chief. 44% approval rating is the latest.

It will drop like a rock when the inexperienced "leader" completely jacks up whatever we do in Syria.

Obama is the first president to achieve the 51 percent mark in two elections since Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, who did it in 1952 and 1956, and the first Democrat to do so since Franklin D. Roosevelt, who won four consecutive White House races. Roosevelt received 53.4 percent of the vote -- his lowest -- in his last race in 1944.

You're right. It was 51% to 47%, a fracking landslide!!! Not =) I think everyone understands he won. Its people stretching the truth(hello you), not remembering it was still pretty close.

For the word socialism, it's pretty simple. WWI and cold war. A lot of early socialist victories were in Germany(Universal healthcare, workers comp etc.) When we went to war against them, anything German, along with socialist ideas were considered bad ideas for America. You also have to realize that American Socialists didn't like the war at all, and were jailed as a result. Then the cold war came around and anything far left wasn't a good idea. Now we're seeing the effects of nearly 100 years of bashing.

The majority of Americans are not at all fearful of socialism as evinced in the last presidential election when America overwhelmingly elected a socialist president. And since then, Democrats (socialists) have been steadily picking up momentum. Moreover, the upcoming midterm elections will translate into Democrat victories in both the House and the Senate. Socialists are on a roll!

Most of the educated people in Europe laugh at what we define as socialism here. It's not even close. Democrats are center-right at best in an actual non-skewed political spectrum. If we skooted back with our last choices for 2012 president and looked at it with 1950's eyes, Romney would look like an extreme right crazy and Obama would look like a typical republican.

The new age Republicans have no clue how extreme they are. Anyone who thinks Obama is a socialist does not have the slightest clue what a socialist is.
