Probably because the printing press had already been invented in Asia.

the entire OP is kind of futile...instead we should have been asked "who is your favourite genius" as it's not possible to pick one as the "greatest"....

I vote for Edison. Anyone can have an idea--now let's make it work.

Even if he did steal some stuff from Tesla, he's still cool.

Personally tho, he was a jerk, but the thread isn't about the nicest people in history--and have you noticed that many geniuses are, in fact, jerks as people?

    Just something I've noticed.

Maybe because they're on a higher plane than the rest of us low-IQ sorts.

his impact was enormous but are we giving him too much credit, is he more of a promoter than a developer...even his light bulb idea wasn't his, he bought the patent from others who had no idea how to develop and promote the concept...if we were to research his products just how many are his own original ideas and which were concepts from others that he developed?...is edison just another Mark Zuckerberg, a smart guy but one who stole his the original concept ....

na it's because they're socially inept, a condition that affects the smart and dumb, it's just more noticeable when it effects famous people, we don't care or notice when it's someone unimportant...

Histories greatest genius will probably never be known. If I were perhaps, the smartest human to ever live, I probably would not share my knowledge with anyone because humans have a tendency to use inventive and intelligent people to create new ways to kill other people.

Eh, you may be right. ..still tho, ya gotta admit, he did make our life much easier--so did Tesla, who's one of my favorite guys. He did some seriously cool things.

I vote for CL Sandquist and Joseph Shivers, co-inventors of Spandex, after that I think the greatest leap of knowledge occurred with Archimedes

I would have to say the old stand by Albert Einstein is 10 on scale of one to ten. Then with Niels Bohr at 9.9 and Kurt Godel at 9.8. This is a subjective question of course, because I consider the nature of reality and the universe the most important questions.

I thought of something after reading your post.

IMHO - History's greatest genius was a man that most of us have probably never heard of, I didn't know his name until I looked him up in Wikipedia.

His name is Louis Reard, and he was a French automotive engineer by profession.

But his genius didn't come from that, it came from another field of endeavor. After WWII, Louis was running his mother's shoe shop in Paris, and he and another designer were involved in a contest to build the world's smallest swimsuit.

Louis designed a simple two-piece swimsuit that was almost obscenely small - in fact, it was so small that he couldn't find a model willing to model it, and had to hire a nude dancer from the Casino de Paris as his model. Louis then named his swimsuit after the site were American nuclear weapons tests were being conducted in the Pacific.

And with that simple stroke of genius, Louis Reard gave society his greatest contribution - the bikini!

I am tempted to nominate Stalin, after reading his biography written by Service. But do evil people deserve to be recognized as smart? I think they should.

Interesting choice. Though spandex does have its drawbacks.
