Who said anything about Canada? This is about Trump building a wall to keep illegal aliens from Mexico out of America.

I see no mention of 2015. Almost seems like a new announcement, but if you have something that proves otherwise, I'm happy to read it.

And now they announce the expansion in the US?

Sure just coincidence. I think I'll take the CEo's statements over "people familiar with the company's moves"... Nice try, but no sale Fiddler.

Negotiations?? There should be no negotiations period. They should pay for it, hook, line & sinker. It should not cost us one penny of tax dollars for that wall.

    Read their press release

Today’s announcement is the second phase of an industrialization plan announced in January 2016.

    http://media.fcanorthamerica.com/newsrelease.do?id=18088&mid=1

FCA US today confirmed the next phase of its industrialization plan by announcing a total $1 billion investment in plants in Michigan and Ohio, and the addition of 2,000 new American jobs. Consistent and combined with previously announced investments, FCA US is further demonstrating its commitment to strengthening its U.S. manufacturing base, and aligning U.S. capacity to extend the Jeep® product lineup. In total, FCA US has committed investments of more than $9.6 billion in its U.S. manufacturing facilities and created 25,000 new jobs to date since 2009.

Today’s announcement is the second phase of an industrialization plan announced in January 2016. The plan called for the realignment of the Company’s U.S. manufacturing operations to fully utilize available capacity to respond to a shift in market demand for trucks and SUVs, and to further expand the Jeep and Ram brands.

With the $1 billion investment, FCA US will retool and modernize the Warren Truck Assembly Plant (Michigan) to produce the all-new Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, and the south plant of the Toledo Assembly Complex (Ohio) to build an all-new Jeep pickup truck. These actions are planned to be completed by 2020. More than 2,000 jobs also will be added to support production of these models. The added benefit of the investment in Warren is that it will enable the plant to produce the Ram heavy duty truck, which is currently produced in Mexico.

“The conversion of our industrial footprint completes this stage of our transformation as we respond to the shift in consumer tastes to trucks and SUVs, and as we continue to reinforce the U.S. as a global manufacturing hub for those vehicles at the heart of the SUV and truck market,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer of FCA N.V. “These moves, which have been under discussion with Dennis Williams and the rest of the UAW leadership for some time, expand our capacity in these key segments, enabling us to meet growing demand here in the U.S., but more importantly to increase exports of our mid-size and larger vehicles to international markets.

“The expansion of our Jeep lineup has been and continues to be the key pillar of our strategy. Our commitment to internationalize the Jeep brand is unwavering, and with these last moves, we will finally have the capacity to successfully penetrate markets other than the U.S. which have historically been denied product due to capacity constraints. In addition, these all-new products will reach new consumers, as well as those that have been part of the Jeep tradition,” said Marchionne.

The actions announced today are subject to the negotiation and final approval of incentives by state and local entities.

    Previously Announced Actions
In July 2016, the Company made two announcements involving production shifts at three plants to gain additional capacity for the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Cherokee and Ram Light Duty Truck.

The first announcement confirmed a more than $1 billion investment and the addition of 1,000 jobs at its Illinois and Ohio plants. The Company will invest $350 million in the Belvidere Assembly Plant (Illinois) to produce the Jeep Cherokee, which will move from its current production location in Toledo, Ohio, in 2017. Approximately 300 new jobs would be created.

Following the move of Cherokee to Belvidere, the Company will invest $700 million in the Toledo Assembly Complex (Ohio) to retool the North plant to produce the next generation Jeep Wrangler. Approximately 700 new jobs will be added.

In the second announcement, FCA US announced that it will invest nearly $1.5 billion in its Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (Michigan) to retool it to build the next generation Ram 1500. In September, the Company committed to adding 700 new jobs to support production.

That's right. They can save face by saying they negotiated a new deal rather than being (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) slapped into one.

I thought you had said this was decided back in 2015? I'll assume it was a typo, I make tons of them myself so cant point a finger at anyone else for the same.

I think the CEOs statements about Trump and Import taxes was pretty compelling, but even if it turns out this was already in the works, this is still great news for Americans and jobs.

Base jumpers might like it. Trump could negotiate to give Mexico a concession to use the moat as a water park.

If Trump does make Mexico pay for a wall, either directly or indirectly, I bet liberals get angry...for some reason.

You know this isn't rocket science. There is no need for any liberal slide-rule logic. NAFTA which was enacted during the Clinton Administration has been a boon for Mexico, and a bust for the US. Finally, we have a President (or will next week) that understands the art of negotiation is not to give away the kitchen sink in exchange for a couple drops of water. For years US companies have been moving south of the border to manufacture goods, and ship them back to this country. The benefit has been lower labor costs, and the harm has been a loss of manufacturing jobs in the US. Add to that the Mexican Trucking companies operating in the US. Many of these trucks do not meet US highway safety standards, but are allowed to operate anyways.

President-elect Trump has said that he plans to renegotiate NAFTA, or pull out all together. He fired the first salvo when he tweeted about GM (a company bailed out by US taxpayers) was building Chevy Cruzes in Mexico, and shipping them to US dealers without paying any tariffs. He told them to build them in the US, or pay a tariff. Shortly after that tweet, Ford announced that they were scrapping their plans to build in Mexico, and will expand operations in Detroit instead. Now, Mexico is in panic mode. These jobs are about to move back to the US. This is why Mexico wants to negotiate with Trump. This is the bargaining chip that Trump can use to get Mexico to help secure the border, and pay for the wall. So far, this has been expertly played. It will be interesting to see if Trump can hold the advantage.

Mexicans like water parks mucho grande. For over a hundred years the Rio Grande has been Mexico's biggest water park attraction. If you made it across the river to Gringo Land you were awarded big time with mucho free stuff.

both sides want import taffifs, using them to pay for the wall is not the same as Mexico paying for the wall

import tarrifs are paid by the American people in increased prices... they will be paying for the wall

it would be like adding a tax to cigarettes and saying cigarette makers are paying for the wall... no... smokers are paying for the wall then....

    In the beginning in America:

Tariffs were collected to run the federal government mostly paying for the nations national security (Army & Navy) and building postal roads, highways (roads, trails, etc) for the national security of the United States.(National Defense Highway System) The Constitution also put the Army in charge of harbors and inland waterways of commerce. The individual sovereign states took care of the rest that needed to be done like the welfare of it's citizens.

The fist federal income tax was a war tax. Progressives became addicted to the war tax during WW l and the rest is history, individual income taxes.

    Back when America was great:

America’s freedom is tied to her economic independence

Alexander Hamilton wrote: ‘Not only the wealth, but the independence and security of a country, appear to be materially connected with the prosperity of manufactures. Every nation...ought to endeavor to posses within itself all the essentials of a national supply. These comprise the means of subsistence, habitation, clothing and defense. ‘ America’s political independence, Hamilton was saying, could not survive without economic independence. “

If the US were to end NAFTA, then businesses that have headquarters in the US have two choices. One is to keep their operations in Mexico, and pay a tariff. Or they can relocate their operations back in the US. I am predicting that they will take the second option. It looks like Mexico is expecting the same thing. That is why they want to negotiate with the Trump Administration. Trump can offer to exempt certain industries, or companies from the import tariffs. This would leave some jobs in Mexico. In exchange, the Mexican Government would agree to seal their southern borders, work with the US in stopping illegals from entering this company, and yes foot some of the cost to build the wall.
