    If anyone is interested...
these are links to a photobucket account with images from Afghanistan,
    from a helicopter pilot.

I posted this way back in '07 when I first became a member here at PF (politicalforum).
This was back when the Iraq war was front and center in the news...
    ...maybe now with Afghanistan more
prevalent in the news ..maybe they'll have more relevance...

It's a nice visual representation of Afghanistan, including the
opium fields...the cash crop of that region...the source of
the majority of heroin in Europe.

I'm obviously not the photographer, nor am I a subject in any
    of the photos...just the messenger.

    enjoy..

The Russians fought like hell against the Germans defending their homeland.

I've read a couple books on various battles, for example the Battle of Stalingrad.

Some of the most brutal battles in human history, and the Soviets beat them back.

You should be proud of your fellow countrymen, even as the Soviets were at
ideological opposites to the West; they were very courageous. No one can say
    otherwise.

when they ran from the Nazi's, stalin ordered any russian that retreated be shot in the head or the back. hence the advance. ever see enemy at the gate???

    True, that did occur.
Like it or not, we had a common enemy in that era...and that was
the Third Reich. I'm not a Soviet sympathizer by any means...but
I respect and acknowledge courage under fire...regardless of the
side it's on. Stalin was brutal, he killed many military leaders after
the victory over the Germans in fear they would be more popular than him.

Stalin was a bigger mass murderer than Hitler. ests of 14 million or more. a lot of em his own people. we were not in that war when Hitler invaded Russia. and we should have stayed out. let them fight it to the death

From an American perspective it's difficult to pick a side.

Stalin's legacy is apparent...as of course is Hitler's.
Both left legacies of unimaginable human suffering.

The perspective I try to keep is that the Soviets were literally defending their homes.
Literally fighting in bombed out buildings that used to be their neighborhood.
From that perspective I would have to say the Third Reich were the "bad guys"...

Much like Finland who fought the Russians in the Winter War...the Finns were defending their homeland...
    the Russians were the invaders...

Very complex geo-political era of human history...
and it remains complex to this day.

stalin signed a pac with Hitler to divide up poland. they both attacked from opposite sides. and look what happened to the poles. murdered.

and stalin was stupid enough to sign a non agression pac with Hitler as well. then came Operation Barbarossa. Stalin got his tit caught in a wringer and screamed for us to help. his dreams of world domination went south. along with Hitlers. they were both dogs of the same pedigree
and post war??? the Iron curtain falls. he had no intentions of honoring any agreement with west.

    All true.

but as they say, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. At the time, the greater
threat to Europe and in particular Great Britain...was the Third Reich.

With the Soviets flanking Berlin on the East, it allowed the Allies to move
    in from the West.

America was also at one time allied with Saddam Hussein...and of course
we all know what happened there.

It's a mad, mad World for sure.
