Mexican drug cartel declares open season on American tourists...

Texas warns of travel to Mexican border town for the Fourth
July 2, 2011 -- Texas authorities are urging residents not to cross into the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo during the Fourth of July weekend because of intelligence that a Mexican drug cartel plans to target U.S. citizens.

The violent Zetas drug cartel, which operates in Nuevo Laredo, will be targeting crimes at Americans who cross the border into the city this weekend, the Texas Department of Public Safety and Webb County Sheriff's Office said Saturday. "According to the information we have received, the Zetas are planning a possible surge in criminal activity, such as robberies, extortions, car-jackings and vehicle theft, specifically against U.S. citizens," DPS Director Steven McCraw said in a statement. "We urge U.S. citizens to avoid travel to Nuevo Laredo this weekend if it can be avoided."

Nuevo Laredo is across the border from Laredo, Texas, a city which bills itself as the "Gateway to Mexico." Four international bridges link Texas and Mexico at Laredo. An average of 11,000 trucks cross the border daily on those bridges. Besides, commerce, the bridges between Laredo and Nuevo Laredo also connect families who have relatives on both sides of the border.

Nuevo Laredo, like most Mexican border cities, offers rows of bars, inexpensive dentists, restaurants and cultural events to draw tourists. But tourism has sharply declined in the past six years as drug cartel violence has spiraled in Mexico. Because of the various bridges into the United States and access to a major highway, Nuevo Laredo has been a turf contested by rival drug cartels.

Taxi drivers focus of Mexico cartels
Fri, Apr 13, 2012 - The killings of 13 Mexican taxi drivers in separate attacks this week underlined the vulnerability of a loosely regulated trade where workers are being threatened or used by drug gangs.

Eight drivers of unregistered taxis were shot dead on Tuesday in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, a hotspot in a wave of violence blamed on warring drug gangs which has left more than 50,000 dead nationwide in five years. A split between the Gulf drug gang and its former enforcers the Zetas is blamed for the sharp rise in violence in the region. Each gang has strengthened its ranks with this group of workers [taxi drivers], who serve many purposes, said an official from the Nuevo Leon state investigation agency, requesting anonymity. The gangs use hawks spies who are usually teenagers on the streets and drug dealers as well as taxi drivers, he said. They use them as lookouts because they know the area and drive around without raising suspicion, to deal drugs and also to back up activities such as kidnappings, assaults and robberies, the official added.

An armed gang traveling in at least two vehicles killed eight taxi drivers and injured two others in attacks on two taxi ranks in the town of Guadalupe, on the outskirts of Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo Leon, on Tuesday. The killings made a total of 23 taxi drivers killed in the metropolitan area of Monterrey since May last year. The legendary resort city of Acapulco, on the Pacific coast, has also seen attacks on taxi drivers rise alongside gangland-style killings in recent years. Acapulco police on Monday found seven bodies, including those of five taxi drivers, in a vehicle abandoned after being involved in a car chase with police.

Drug gangs sometimes threaten taxi drivers to get them to sign up while others who are killed have no known links to organized crime. Were experiencing a struggle between criminal groups and taxi drivers who are, unfortunately, very vulnerable to this dynamic because, even if some are shown to be involved in crimes, many of them work under threat or are innocent victims, said Cesar Garza, president of the Security Commission of the Nuevo Leon Congress.

Traffic police and other officers recently experienced a similar wave of attacks in the region, but local authorities managed to clamp down by purging their ranks, Garza said. Authorities have now strengthened control and its more difficult to infiltrate these corporations, Garza said, suggesting that taxi drivers denounce criminal groups and cooperate with the authorities.

Mexican police find 49 bodies dumped on highway
May 13, 2012 - Latest suspected incident of drug gangs leaving corpses in public as warning to rivals

Forty-nine bodies, at least some of them mutilated, were found Sunday dumped on a highway connecting the northern Mexican metropolis of Monterrey to the U.S. border, officials said. A law enforcement official said the bodies of 43 men and six women were found in the town of San Juan on the non-toll highway to the border city of Reynosa at about 4 a.m. local time, but officials were still investigating.

Authorities closed off the highway, blocking the way for hundreds of motorists, as federal and state police, joined by Mexican troops, sealed off the scene. The law enforcement official asked that his name not be used because he was not authorized to release the information. The details, however, match reports in Mexican news media.

The discovery echoes several other recent cases in which drug gangs have left bodies scattered in public places as warnings to rivals. Thirty-five bodies were left at a freeway overpass in the city of Veracruz in September. Twenty-six were found in November in Guadalajara. So far this month, 23 bodies were found dumped or hanging in the city of Nuevo Laredo and 18 were found along a highway south of Guadalajara.

Mexico drug war: More than 40 people killed in weekend violence
August 20, 2012 - More than 40 people were killed across Mexico at the weekend as violence linked to the country's drug war intensifies.

More than 40 people were killed across Mexico at the weekend, including 12 in the famous Pacific resort city of Acapulco. According to the Spanish news agency EFE, 10 men and two women were shot dead in the seaside city, which has seen an escalation in drug-related violence in recent years. Authorities have responded to the wave of deadly incidents by launching a security operation in tourist areas in the city, EFE reported.

Acapulco has been losing tourists to other parts of the country as Mexican and foreign holiday makers seek out safer destinations. Mexican newspaper El Universal reported that six people were killed in three separate incidents in Torreon, a city in the northern state of Coahuila, where the Zetas and Sinaloa drug gangs have been fighting a deadly turf war. In the western state of Michoacan, the bodies of two photographers were found in the trunk of a car on Sunday afternoon.

The victims, Jose Antonio Aguilar Mota, 26, and Arturo Barajas, 46, appeared to have been tortured, Proceso magazine reported, joining a growing list of Mexican journalists murdered by drug cartels. After several weeks of relative calm following the July 1 presidential election, Mexico has seen a wave of deadly violence in the past two weeks. More than 55,000 people have died in drug-related violence in the past six years.
